Lightbulb Hac 10.6.3; Applications hang when asked to display a File Open dialog

To be honest, I don't know if this is a Hac issue, or could happen on a genuine Mac. I installed Snow Leopard on my quad-core hackintosh about 3 weeks ago, and everything seemed fine to start with. (possibly unrelated) I updated to 10.6.3, and applied the 'minor patch' that Apple released just after 10.6.3.
The problem I'm seeing in the last week is, every now and then an application crashes at the point that it needs to open a File/Open dialog. This happens with different applications. It just pauses at that point of trying to open the File view and I have to kill it. At this point, if I go into Disk Utility, it won't load properly but perpetually displays ''Gathering Disk Information".
If I reboot, I can usually access Disk Utility when my session starts, and Verify Permissions and Verify Disk return no issues.
Any ideas what the problem could be?

    hi there,
have you check with Activity monitor (and or Console) and see may be some conflic is going on?
or is there enough space left on your harddisk?
or may be try login in single user mode (boot with -s) and delete /Users/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist file. But you may be want to make a backup of it to desktop before delete it.
and while in single user mode, you can also run /sbin/fsck -fy until it say all healthy.
    goodluck.

Hmm, I've tried your suggestions, but I'm still having the same issues. Any other suggestions appreciated.

After seeing 100s of messages relating to Growl in the Console, I disabled Growl, and it seems to have fixed my issues.
