DELL Vostro 200 (no AHCI option in BIOS) - both iBoot fails/crashes
Hi there, I am a hackintosh newbie (so far)... I am trying to get "something" to boot on my spare DELL PC.
Its hardware is:
Core2 Duo 3.0 Ghz
4 GB RAM
250 GB HD
nVidia 8x00 series (have more than one type to pick from, if needed)
internal network (but I think I have some PCI spares too if this isnt supported)
Its going to be used for 3D software testing, so I dont need sound, but I could put a soundblaster or something into it if thats needed.
I've bought the Mac OSX Snow Leopard 10.6.3 so I dont need to download some pirate version. Its a small price if I get this machine up and running.
Problem is that I cant even get iBoot to boot proberly. It crashes and tells me that ACHI isnt supported and there is no option in the DELL Vostro 200 BIOS that allows me to change it.
So, what kinda PC boot DVD/CD/Flash thingy could I utilize from here? I've looked at "Chameleon_DFE_for_Hard_Disk", but it seems to be a MacOSX program?
I dont have access to torrents nor Piratebay stuff, as its blocked here.
and I dont have a real Mac OSX to burn any disk or copy an image from.
Am I stuck here forever or is there a solution I have missed? I have 3 PC's so, there is plenty of "network" available if I need to do a network installation from a Linux booted on a CDROM or some strange way.. just dont know what to do and in what order...
I'm writeable on "firstname.lastname@example.org" if anyone wants to be private, its an alias I can close down if spammed. :-)
Well dooohhh... I aparently completely failed reading the install instructions. I kept hitting ENTER on the iBoot icon, not replacing the boot CD with the original DVD and hitting F5 first.
So now, its showing a grey background with a darkere apple and the "swirreling delayed loading icon" ... but on top of the apple icon is a "no entrance" icon too. Which I guess is bad, so now I will try to reboot once more and hit -x as parameter before starting the Mac OSX installer. Perhaps that will help.
Currently I am using DELL's latest BIOS for this machine. No hacks, no special super-duper BIOS thingy. But I am going there too if needed.
Nope, didnt do a difference except takeing even longer to "boot". I have a feeling that the missing AHCI mode, which I cant select in the current BIOS might be causing the problem.
Will try to see if I can patch/flash the BIOS with something better, somehow.
Trying iBoot Legacy... listning to TRON Legacy music while trying all this. Seems very fitting )
So far the logo shows the same "no access" sign. Seems I will need to fix that BIOS now. (
Nope, no luck so far. But I've started experimenting with parametres now.
Right before hitting ENTER to boot from the Snow Leopard, I hit SPACE and enter: -v -x cpus=1 busratio=20 platform=APCI rd=disk0
but still after waiting (since I use X mode for Safemode) I get "Still waiting for root device"... and I have also disabled onboard audio and network, just to see what makes it install correctly. I can always do a reinstall once I figure out what settings are usefull.
I believe the nVidia 8600 GT might be a problem for it too. But I have a 8800 GTS here and an 8800 GT too, so thats my least problem. If only I could get it to find the root device somehow.
Now, I finally got it up and running.
DELL Inspiron 530 boot ISO
and a little KEXTS and then you are going... quite easy, once you spot what it takes.
It still boots from the CD when powered on, but I am trying a secondary Vostro 200 now and I will try to install a bootcamp/bootmenu so that a Windows 7 can co-exist on the drive.
I'll keep you posted of progress. But so far I have a Mac Pro with 3.0 Ghz Intel Core2 Duo... which runs very smooth with 3D applications. YES!
Did you have to do anything to the BIOS on the Vostro 200 to make it boot the DVD? I keep trying but can't get past the apple screen with the slash on it.
DELL Vostro 200
I have tried Ideneb 1.6 DVD on a Vostro 200 and I was successfull installing to an usb external harddrive without AHCI setting change. Now it is booting but I have to work on the drivers: network, sound, display so on.
