Your best bet is a fresh 10.6.x installation.

Use your current OSX to note for devices/kexts installed.
If you can spare one more pri partition then use your current OSx to install retail DVD.
Anyhow, do need to know your specs/cpu/chipsets etc. to choose retail or distro.

yea i can spare a new partition to make it easier for myself
my method of base indeneb 10.5.7 was custom install with
-all kernals
-ichx
-voodoo power
studio 15 is core 2 duo, intel Pm45 chipset.
does this narrow it down?
thx

That does narrow it down.
You CPU could take a vanilla kernel (use it for best performance). You can either do a retail DVD or distro, as your system should be very compatible. Distro release would be more convenient as it came with support files premade. You can try iAtkos S3 v2 10.6.3 Snow Leopard, and should not have much trouble installing it.
You could also erase the Leopard partition and just install onto it, unless you want to have 2 OSX volumes for repair and other things like I do.
