Unhappy What distro to install on HP/Compaq nc6120?

I have an HP/Compaq nc6120 laptop with the following spec:

    Pentium M 740 CPU (1.73 GHz)
    Intel 915GM Chipset
    Intel GMA900 Video
    512MB RAM
    Broadcom 4318 wifi
    Broadcom NetXtreme 10/100/1000 ethernet
    AC97 audio
    60GB IDE HDD

The only distro I've had any degree of success with has been JaS's 10.4.8, which worked straight out of the box, with the exception of the LAN stuff. No matter what I've tried, I could not get either the wifi nor the ethernet adapters to be recognised.

    I then tried Leopard...

    iDeneb 10.5.5 - no
    Kalyway 10.5.2 - no
JaS 10.5.4 - couldn't get into the installer program!
    iPC 10.5.6 - almost!

I found that the iPC version gave me the most likely choices to match the hardware of my lappie, but after countless attempts with varying combinations, including the so-called "paperclip" or "staple" trick I am about to admit defeat and stick my tried n tested Kubuntu 8.10 in it and give it up.

If anyone can raise my spirits and give me some renewed hope of getting OSX86 to work, please please get in touch!!!

    Thanks...

Actually all of them should work, your doing something wrong, how did you customize your installation, lets say with ideneb or iPC?

I've JUST this minute got it working (of sorts)!
Using the iPC distro, I selected the 9.2 (speedstep) kernel, GMA900 video driver, Broadcom wireless driver, AC97 audio, single CPU fix (CPUS). This was the same as I had selected on a previous attempt, only this time I had an external monitor connected to the VGA port instead of the paperclip link inserted.
The system takes a good 5 to 7 minutes to fully boot up (compared to 35 seconds with JaS's 10.4.8) and the keyboard and touchpad don't work, needing me to connect a USB mouse and keybd.
Aside from that it all seems to work ok, except that the dock seems no different to the Tiger version (could that be due to using the 9.2 kernel?).
My confidence had been restored a little, but I'm now not sure if I have to carry out a re-installation to resolve the issues listed above, or can I tweak it from within the OS?
I am a complete noob, but learning very fast!!!
Any advice or suggestions would be greatfully received.

Ah the trick with VGA thingy I have to see that, someday...

    Anyway with iPC

Try Voodoo Kernel, have to be faster then Speedstep
Select your usual drivers, forget about cpus fix...
About the keyboard and touchpad, you need to install PS/2 Device Support.

Now the Dock... dont looks like this?

Actually you dont need to reinstall... to install Voodoo, just need to download it and install, google it...

and PS2 Device support you can find it in the DVD

    Hello!

Thanks to your help, I have had some success!

Here's my list of options from the customize screen:
    Kernel - Voodoo 9.5
Chipset - Legacy AppleIntel PIIX ATA
    Video - Intel GMA900
    Audio - AC97
    Ethernet - Apple BCM440x
    Wireless - Broadcom
    PS/2 Keyboard fix

It now works, although there are still some issues I'd really like to sort out.

Firstly the most serious problem: Whenever I try to download and install any software, such as RealPlayer for example, I get the following screen:

...and I have to reboot. Incidentally, I took a chance and ran the Apple Software Update before I tried installing any software and it all went through faultlessly.

Next up is the audio, which works fine for a few minutes, then the Mute LED comes on all by itself and remains mute until I press either the Vol up or down keys.

Finally (so far) I cannot find anywhere an option to enable Tapping on my touchpad. I've looked in the Keyboard & Mouse secion of System preferences, but there is no tab for mouse!!

Also, is there any way I can reduce the amount of time it takes to boot the machine up? It's currently taking around 6 minutes.

So far so good. It's taken me nearly two weeks to get to a point where I'm starting to see some reward for the 40GB or so I've used in downloading all these different distros!

Thanks in advance for any support and help you may give.

There was no real intelligence used to select this patch - I tried a couple of the others with no success, and this one seemed to work. Is that going to cause me a problem later on?

You sir, are a complete legend!!!

I've worked out that the muting "problem" might not be a problem after all, as it seems to automatically enable whenever a sound needs to be played. Odd!

Just some minor niggles left to fix and I'm done!

Namely - loading a UK Keyboard profile, sorting out the touchpad tapping feature, getting the battery status icon onto the menu bar and getting the bluetooth to work properly. (It's a bit intermittent...) I'll have another trawl through these forums and see if I can find the solutions, unless you can assist?

Once again, thanks so much for helping thus far!
