Discuss Sony Vaio VPCW111XX Netbook at the Installation - Hackint0sh.org; Since I was done with the HP Mini 1030NR and Toshiba NB205 hackint0sh project, I ...
Sweet - I was considering that as well since it has the same CPU as the Toshiba. I notice the screen grab has an Essentials folder started - how close are you to releasing that? Or can I help with the install in any way?
@toshi205: It's a great netbook and in my opinion, better than the Toshiba NB205. A small group of us pretty much finished this hackint0sh project. My essentials pack is available in the link on my signature. There, you can follow all the threads from day 2 to Snow Leopard. Let me know if you have any questions regarding this project.

This is from the repeated attempts by me and the guys on insanely mac.
Running the VPCW121AX Sony Vaio W.
I have 1366x769 QE/CI enabled in 10.5.8 - no problem.
1) Used iAtkos 710.5.7 to install:
Intel 950 (had a lost of problems here till I realized that all 3 950s had to be checked)
9.7 Voodoo Kernel
Bios Enabler (About this Mac would not work and restarted finder without it)
PS2 keyboard with trackpad.
boot with cpus=1 on first boot.
-No LAN, wifi, and sound is a bit distorted/scratchy at times (mic and sound jacks also disabled).
-Use a ZyXEL 300Mbps NWD-271N USB wifi (OSX driver installed from company website, works in 10.6 also)
2) Updated with the Ideneb Combo update to 10.5.8 w/ vanilla core.
cpus=1 on first boot again
Start IAtkos and unchecked all but Intel 950. (will say failed, but just ignore the error)
Installed all listed updated from Software update.
3) Have been told that removing/reinstalling the audio kexts will correct the scratchy sound. Will test this as well.
I have also pushed this model thru osx 10.6.2 with the new atom kernal patch, but could not get the video above 1024x768 and could never get the sound working so reinstalled to 10.5.8.
As another note, have installed this from IPC 10.5.6 as well, but the video is not corrected and iAtkos 7 must be used for the video drivers again.
I really hope that someone can get the Atheros 8132 for the LAN or the Atheros 9285 for the wifi working at some point. neither would work under 10.6.2 either.
At the moment, there's no fix for the LAN or WiFi chip. Your best bet right now is to swap out the chip with a Dell WiFi half mini. So what do you have confirmed working on your netbook? What's your current version of OSX you are running? These tips will help out on your project:
1. Overclocking the 950 chipset. Animations and video playback are a lot smoother
2. Shaving off boot load time by deleting the cpus=1 flag
3. Modifying a specific kext to reduce the fan activity. Right now, you'll probably notice your fan going for no apparent reason or being loud. This will cut down the activity of the fan and have it spin quietly
It's a great netbook!

I had already discovered a cure for the fan... voodoopower.kext corrected the high fan issue for me and I removed the cpus=1 flag a while back.
Had not heard of the gma950 boost, but I have installed the GMABooster to change the bus to 400mhz now, runs stable, but have not run any comparisons yet.
I am staying with 10.5.8 now (IAtkos 7 initial with Ideneb 10.5.8 update as listed previously). This seems to be the most stable configuration and syncs with my .me account well.
The HD that comes with the system is a 250GB 1 amp HD, changed it out with a 500GB .5 amp HD and this seems to give me a little more time on battery when I am using HD a lot. Probably using these HDs up since they do not do well on a lot of system's USB power.
Also switched the ram to 2 GBs.
I also have the system triple booting Win 7 Ultimate, OSX, and Ubuntu 9.10 using chameleon 2.0 rc3.
Not working -
lan, wifi, sleep, keys for brightness, & mic jack
Partially tested -
Bluetooth works with a MS wirless mouse I had, but have not tested it with any other equip... assume it will work fine though.
Not tested -
I have a usb wireless n and a usb mic & headset combo that works great for skype.
Overall I am pleased with the system. It is a hard running little machine, and the LED display with its 1366x768 gives it the best picture of any netbook I have used.
I have been told that the wirless chip is hardwired in the system on this model, can you confirm or deny this.. I would love to switch this out with a Dell 1510 or such.
