Default Question about choices: re-install Leopard, Upgrade to Snow L/Lion, virtual machine?

    Hello all!

I am currently running a computer with 2 HDD's, one is running Windows Vista 64bit Ultimate, and the other OSX Leopard. Both are torrented.
I did not build or install myself, my ex-boyfriend did all the work, so honestly I am not entirely sure how this all works.

My question is really... what are my options? And how do I go about doing it? Will I need to re-install Windows AND OSX? Do I need to purchase a OSX disc from Apple?
I would prefer to upgrade to Lion, and run a virtual machine, so I can launch OSX from Vista (or Win 7, if I ever get around to re-installing Windows).
If a virtual machine is not possible, I would like to just upgrade my OSX to Snow Leopard or Lion.

    My hardware:
Intel Core 2 Duo 3.16 GHz
4GB Ram (2 x 2GB (used to be 8 (2 x 4GB), but one or two or the RAMs are dead. Can possibly upgrade to 6 if needed) Ballistix SATA
    GeForce 9800 GTX
    2 x 1TB HDD

    Halp!
