Dell GX280 install and updates of Kalyway OSX

I am doing this as I am old hat when it comes to pc but new to mac so I spent some time getting it correct and working so hear it is all in one place.

Step 1 Download Kalyway 10.5.2 OSX DVD For INTAL/AMD PC
Google or torrant site.

Step 2 Burn Image to disk using nero etc “do it as slow as poss”

Step 3 Boot into PC BIOS disable NIC get another and install it I used a 3COM one works a treat the one on board don’t work with OSX “there may be a patch”

Step 4 Put disk in PC and press F12 and boot from it “Dell Boot Loader chose CD/DVD Rom”
It takes some time but boots.

Step 5 set up Hard Drive using the Disk tools its simple just set up partition and close window when finished in fact its so simple with the mac software you often think there needs to be more to do well hay I came from a pc background and that’s the way it is.

Install OSX pick drive you just set up and just go for it no need to change anything it just works out of the box.

Step 6 When done restart LOL it works I will follow this guid with updating to 10.5.3 and so on as I get round to it.

By the way i am now upto 10.5.4

OK Kalyway 10.5.2 to 10.5.3 on a Dell GX280

Step 1 Download :


1_Kalyway_UpdCombo10.5.3.pkg
2_kalyway_10.5.3_kernel.pkg

Goggle it or from a torrent site I use Demonoid

Step 2 install comboupdate by opening Kalyway_UpdCombo10.5.3.pkg

“Don't Restart at the end”

Step 3 Install kalyway_10.5.3_kernel.pkg by clicking on it when you get the option don’t select a kernel just carry on and let it use default.

Step 4 Reboot press space at start of reboot when darwin loader starts then at the loader window Type: update –v

Press Enter It will load up all done Enjoy “10.5.4 will follow soon”

OK Kalyway 10.5.3 to 10.5.4 on a Dell GX280

Step 1 Download :

MacOSXUpd10.5.4.dmg

Goggle it I downloaded my one from Apple direct.

Step 2 install MacOSXUpd10.5.4.dmg by opening MacOSXUpd10.5.4.dmg on the Mac

“Restart at the end”


Step 3 Reboot press space at start of reboot when darwin loader starts then at the loader window Type: update –v

Press Enter It will load up all done Enjoy “10.5.5 will follow soon”

Observations @ this point...

System Profiler is not working fully?

When i restart i have to do the update -v every time or else it just keeps rebooting.

If anyone has any idears on how to fix this them please chip in.

I also had to run "update -v" every time after I updated from 10.5.2 to 10.5.3. Then I found out that update was not a command, it was the name of the kernel.

So there were 2 solutions:

1:
modify the file /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist using the commands:

sudo -s
nano /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist

You will get a file that looks like this:

<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs$
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
<key>Kernel</key>
<string>mach_kernel</string>
<key>Kernel Flags</key>
<string></string>
<key>Timeout</key>
<string>5</string>
</dict>
</plist>

Replace the line <string>mach_kernel</string> with <string>update</string> and save the document.

2:
Make a backup of the used kernel and then rename the update kernel as the old one using the commands:

sudo cp /mach_kernel /mach_kernel.bak
sudo cp /update /mach_kernel

You can select the old kernel any time entering mach_kernel.bak at boot.
