    Wink OSX As A HTPC

This is just a thread to gather some inputs for those who have done this before

    I have a PC ( in a nice HTPC case - the ZALMAN HD160 Enclosure ).

The specs of the PC is

    • Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 rev 2.0
    • CPU Intel E6750 2.66 GHz dual core
    • 2 Gb ( 1 x 1 Gb ) Corsair 800 MHz
    • Sound - bluegear CMI8788
    • nVidia 8800 GTS ( 320 Mb )

There is built-in sound but disabled ( used the bluegear cause it outputs DTS to my DENON receiver via the optical SPDIF output ). It's connected to a 50 inch HITACHI FULLHD plasma TV via the DVI to one of the HDMI inputs. It has a local 750 Gb Seagate disk and networked to the Thecus 5200 ( with 5 x 1 TB ) NAS in the backroom.

It has 2 tuner cards ( the Hauppauge HVR 1100 and the PowerColor - ATI based Theater 550 Pro ) which is connected to 2 cable boxes.

The HTPC is running Windows Vista Home Premium utilising the Media Center functionality ( operated via remote ) or the Logitec DiNovo Edge keyboard. Did some research and generally think OSX will install without issues ( I have a spare 400 Gb SATA hard drive laying around )

    Things that will not work

    1. TV Tuner cards ( both cards will not work with OSX ) bummer
    2. blueGear soundcard will not work .. the built-in soundcard on the mobo will work but not sure if the optical out will work

The rest should be working without issues .. make it dual boot and have OSX running on a big screen

and it's studio quality .. those who are looking into making music should consider using this that those built-in crap that comes with your mobo

This just released ATOM board looks sweet ... almost perfect for a silent HTPC

    CPU Compatibility
Name Intel Atom N330 (dual-core) (1.6 GHz) HyperThreading compatible
    Socket NA (integrated CPU)
    Front-side bus 533 MHz

    Memory
    Memory Type DDR2
    Memory Speed 667/800 MHz
    Slots 2 240-pin DIMM
    Capacity Up to 4GB

    3D API
    DirectX DirectX 10
    OpenGL OpenGL 2.1
    Integrated Wifi 802.11n

    Ports
    DVI 1 (HDCP)
    HDMI 1 (HDCP w/7.1-channel Audio)
    VGA 1
    SATA 3 (SATA 3.0 Gbps)
    eSATA 1 (SATA 3.0 Gbps)
    PS/2 1 (Keyboard)
USB 2.0 10 (6 on back panel, 4 via pin header)
    Ethernet 10/100/1000Mbps (RJ45)
    Cooler Passive(Optional Low-Noise Fan)

Almost because there are no full size PCI or PCIE slot for a tuner card ( have to make do with USB tuners ) ... and if it runs OSX ?

Where can I get one ...
