    Default New Install Issue

    Good Morning All,
I am having problems with boot my install DVD on my Gateway laptop. I have heard a lot of people talk about using an external hard drive to boot iDeneb or any other flavor. Can someone tell me how to prep an external harddrive and to copy the DVD to the hard drive. I have used dd in linux and I get errors like can not find operating system, etc. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks All

All I can tell you right now is I have a Gateway MX6440 with an AMD Turion 64bit. I have 1 gig of RAM. I WD 160 gig HD. I have tried different DVD's with no luck. I believe that the HD and DVD drive are ATA, not SATA.

I meant IDE, not ATA. Sorry for the confusion.

Did you patch the your installation with AMD Patches and remember you dont support vanilla kernel so you have to choose another kernel like, speedstep or another with AMD support. good luck

I am very new to this. Are there instruction on how to patch an installation? I insert the DVD and boot the laptop and hit F8. I type -v and see the error show up there. I can't get a good installation at this point.

The error is Still Waiting on Boot Device. BTW the drives in the laptop are IDE, I just verified that.

Well you can try with Zephiroth or Kalyway they have support for AMDs and try to get a USB DVD drive but your laptop seems incompatible~ try if you have the resources

I have tried a USB DVD drive and the wierd thing about that is the system sees the drive but it does not show up in the boot options with the others. That is wierd. My external hard drive will show up but I can not figure out the best way to move the DVD to the external hard drive. When I get done with dd, I can't seem to boot from the external harddrive.
