Not sound rude or anything but...
What's your hardware? What version of the distro did you use? What kext/drivers/fixes did you install? What kernel did you pick?
When you first start up are you trying the -cpus=1 thing if you're using a dual core processor? Are you on Intel or AMD?
I can't really offer any good advice but I can tell you from experience here by reading that if you don't list your hardware and as much information as possible, your thread is going to end up at the end of the list and probably never answered. Chances are you still won't get an answer regardless of how much information you provide simply because the guys who know what they are talking about are busy. Think of it like this, if you have 10 guys here who know what they are talking about and 2000 who are asking for help...well...it'll probably take a while to get an answer won't it?
List your spec's and as much detail as possible and maybe someone can give you some helpful advice. Good luck!

dual booting Windows 7and 1/2 working OS X
i used the chameleon patched Kalyway 10.5.2 intel Amd DVD for install, when through perfectly.
Installed the OS onto a partitioned drive, (formatted the partition correctly and installed fine, no errors.)
After install completed it asked for restart, i ejected the disk and no luck, (had already sorted out the dual boot with my windows 7 using the chain0 file and easy BCD.
When laptop boots the boot screen comes up and the list of os', when i select OSX it does to the countdown, during which i have to press f8 or it does back to the os selection screen. after i have pressed f8 i am offered a list of HDDs. i select where i installed OS X (onto my OSX partition, hd(0.3) OSX ) The message then comes up below "Press Enter to start up darwin/x86 with no options, or u can: type -v and press enter....... advanced startup options

ive tried many combinations here with -v, -x, -s, cpus=1 with no luck.

I wasn't trying to be rude or anything, so I hope you didn't take it that way.
I'm not sure what you should do or what to tell you to do to try and solve your problem. But having it listed that way, I'm sure someone else who has the knowledge I don't can probably answer your question better.
You tried the -cpus=1 thing and you said that didn't work. Somewhere on this forum, I think, I posted about having problems after install too. Seems like someone told me to try platform=acpi or something like that. There was another option also but I can't recall off the top of my head what it was. It might have been on the insanely mac forum and not here, as that's the only other one I hang out on hunting solutions to my problems.
I had to go through about 5 different distros until I got one that would boot back up after install. And that required that I reinstalled it a few times until I got the right combination. I can't recode errors or anything so I can't tell you what you should try to change during your next reinstall. I've never figured out how to change things within the install using the command console, so that means I have to reinstall. But I finally did get it working and only have an occasional kernel panic every now and then.
I got my successful install on a Dell 2200 with an Intel processor. I've also got an HP laptop with the same processor as yours and I have the same issues you are having as well. I can't tell you the number of installs I've done on that machine that are successful and then it won't reboot. I've never seen the welcome video on that machine, let alone the desktop.

I was told to try :
-cpus=1 -v -x -f platform=acpi idlehalt=0
Try that or a combination of that and see if it works for you. I actually got a little farther today with some crap about PS2 or something. I don't know. I've reinstalled on this HP so many times that I've forgot what I've picked and what I've not tried yet.
Stuff like this is a simple way of saying "buy a real Mac"...hahaha.
