Initially yes just 256Mb of RAM, install took about 2 and half hrs. I only put the extra RAM in when I noticed it was the same type.
Machine is Intel P4 2.8 machine from HP, no idea of mobo or anything else, all on board devices
    Version
    Kalyway 10.5.2

Tried Safari and network, but showed as un-available
At some point after the install I checked the BIOS and saw the LAN/USB etc were enabled, strange since I thought I had disabled.

ANyway booted ok, so shutdown added the extra RAM 3 x 512mb plus the 256 stick. and an extra HDD.
    Re booted OK

This is when I managed to connect to Internet...and then the fatal mistake....

I did the Apple software upgrade.

No restart, it just kept asking for restart 'Press and hold the Pwr button ' Message.

I did another re -install with all the new RAM in and this took about 25 minutes, but it will not start. I just get the 'No Smoking' symbol across the apple logo.

Trying a third install with 256 RAM, single HDD again.

Could have, or just the three identical 512 sticks, but I know the original 256 worked, and install is now half way through. Just checked again, 30 minutes to go.

That USB package would be usefull, thanks

Then I will have to get the ethernet working again...without knowing how I did it last time....

I do have a a iDeneb 10.5.5 torrent d/loading now, so may try that tomorrow.

Well now the install has finished but this time it is stuck in a loop, just after it asks you to select if you want to transfer data from another machine or Do not transfer information. It just jumps back to the select keyboard again.

Well going to leave this for a while...have wasted three days on it when my car is in bits in the workshop. just about had enoguh today

I gave up last night after almost 12 solid hrs playing with all this.....but could not sleep because of thinking about it. Got up at 0300 to try other stuff.

Put all memory 3 x 512, 1 x 256, changed all BIOS settings to the Optimized defaults (LAN/USB/Audio/ everything on) with one keystroke.

And it has got out of the loop.

So it is working again.....how?????BIOS probably what setting??????cant tell exactly.

I wont try an upgrade again in a hurry , no I realize there is more to it than jsut going to the Apple site

    Will check out your FAQ

    Thanks

    Neil

Regarding the HP BIOS after reading your HP install guide

This is a HP Compaq dx2000 MT with American Megatrends BIOS..(not sure of Rev at the moment).

The Kalaway 10.5.2 install works perfectly with all standard default settings. Just an observation from this particular saga.

Default Do you ever get sick of these b****y machines?

Been working on it all day... 4 days now...

Got USB working once, for about 30 seconds, till reboot required for the IOUSB family package. then i did not work again.

Decide to leave that till I could get some more feedback from here on the USB and the sound, spent the rest of the day setting up iTunes, coping music etc across.

Put cover back on and put the machine back out of the way, all plugged in.
rebooted and it took v.long time to start then no ethernet....moving it seemed to cause problems..
Possible hardware fault???? it is now

All irrevelant now as I gave it one final going over with a large hammer and stuck the whole b****y thing in the dump. memory HDD's the lot, all gone wasted 4 days on it already...really....sick of the whole thing today....going to bed...

It had to be hardware...I mean turning it off, putting the side panel back on and moving it three foot on to the shelf should not cause ehternet to drop out unless the mobo has problems.

Well it is certainly f****D now it did feel good

Plenty more h/ware here to try out....but not today....had enough for a few days. Should be getting a load more in a few days as well, along with some Netgear 250gig NAS boxes, no idea what to do with them, prob clean them out and pass them on to other family members
