Default Help getting slep to work on hp mini 1000 10.5.7

I have been looking around for weeks for a solution to this problem. The only things I can find are fixes for 10.5.8. Everything else seems to work properly except for the sleep function. When I close the lid everything stays on and when I manually put it to sleep it has to be rebooted. I am sorry if this topic has been covered. If anyone can help I would appreciate it.

So I was just messing around with the mini and I was wrong about it not waking up after manually putting it to sleep. It does come back on, however the mouse does not work. I am pretty sure the key board works because if I hit tab it highlights the hard drive icon.
