After using Mac for 20 years now and having used all versions of MS Office on the Mac I fianlly made it to avoid the Software at all.
I use iWork from Apple (80 $ or so) comes with keynote (PowerPoint compatible, mostly), Pages (Word files open and save) and Numbers (Excel open and save) - perfect for me.
If I need MS Office 100% compatibility, I used to have free NeoOffice (http://www.neooffice.org/neojava/en/index.php).
just my 2 cent

My biggest problem stepping away from Office was the fact that I had all my contacts, calendar and stuff organized in Entourage (like Outlook on Win). On a Mac syncing relies on Apple's apps in this case address book and iCal. You can of cause sync Entourage with both Apple apps but this is often trouble.
So stepping away from entourage and getting used to Apples apps took me a while.
Now I am really happy with both apps, dont miss MS stuff at all

RAM will be pushing this a lot. I have 4 gig in both of my Macs, it boosts performance a lot - as on any unix system
