    Guys,

Can someone explain to me the following comment posted by some guy on GeoHot's blog:

"Then, add on the factor that fewer U.S. hackers are interested in the 3G unlock, since the frequencies involved eliminate all but AT&T."

What does he mean by "frequencies involved"? As far as I know the iPhone 3g is quad-band GSM 850 / GSM 900 / GSM 1800 / GSM 1900. Why is AT&T so special? Or does it refer to the fact that only AT&T is offering 3G capabilities in US?

i think hes refering to t-mobiles 3g network in the usa runs at a frequency that is not supported by the iphone, so apparently the only 3g network which the iphone can use in the usa, is the at&t one. which would explain why americans are uninterested in an unlock. The case around the rest of the world is obivously different as in the uk we have lots of 3g networks.

OK, let's try to really decipher this, and not ask a million times "is this the 3G unlock"...

His "look beyond the code" suggests that it's not an obious "ah, this code has this bug and we're there". I quickly tried to scan this code w/ my old ASM knowledge, didn't really see something (but then again, I'm not an ASM hacker, and didn't spend too long on it)

It might simply be that he's able to disassemble actual code from the baseband/bootloader/whatever via a simple app (like ta_mobile did w/ dumping the bootloader, but that via hardware), which then means that some things become much easier to check/read/search for exploits.

Hence the remark by MuscleNerd "It now depends on the community"

Or maybe a buffer underflow, or...

Let's first ask ourselve: What the hell is this ?

    Hey guys,

    Here's my take on this:

I think it's very childish to post something most of the readers won't understand. Some people are interested and have tools (as in mindset) to understand what they post. Some people don't have time to figure out what they're saying and some people simply can't even with time.

I understand that there should be some secrecy when dealing with important knowledge but posting a disassembly like that is plain silly.

Now think with me, Geohot could be in two different sets:

1 - He wants to show people that he's on to something. In this case I would rather have him just post this: "I'm on to something related to the 3G unlock, it's just a possibility so don't get your hopes up. Details will come when I have time"

2 - He wants the other hackers to know he found something (and doesn't care about the ordinary joe cause he won't explain every detail), so I would rather have him just go to IRC and pvt the people he wants to address. So that the rest of the readers wouldn't be asking themselves what is going on.

Now we could see that Dev-Team has had an improvement in their PR because now they post what people want to know. They want to jailbreak so they post an approximate date, they want to know about 3G unlock so they post an update about that in every post, they want to know what is safe so Dev-Team posts about not using *sim...

Maybe Geohot should learn from Dev-Team and get someone to do his PR.

    Just my two cents.

As far as I'm concerned I just gave up on trying to understand what's going on with the 3G unlcok, those that know what's going on are hiding it and those that aren't in those groups are shooting in the dark. I'll just relax and do other stuff and when (if) a 3G unlock comes I'll download y/z/pwn/Phone and have fun.

Truly amazes me that someone who has the power to inform people will refrain from doing that.

    Have fun!

of you ever heard/saw geohot speak, you'll know posting info like this is his personality..

life is a riddle to him, and he unravels riddles..

so he posts in riddles just like most of the dev team did until they hired Arty and Lyod.

I think this time he is really asking a questions.

if he was stating that he found something interesting it would read "what is this?"

also is it just me or is the image seem cropped (the bottom is cut off)

As was pointed out on one of the comments.
"Look beyond the code" could mean look at the rest of the image and indeed modifying the levels in photoshop gives a clear pattern that could be mistaken as jpg noise except it's a png.

Could this be what he was hinting at?
