Hi all--also have a new Maximus II Formula that I just installed this past weekend and was having problems with both iPC 10.5.6 and iAtkos v5i.

Initially, booting each DVD would cause the system to restart. I was able to fix this with cpus=1, which allowed me to install both distros--however each would hang at the buffers line. I got past this under iPC with the ACPI Fix, but now it hangs at the Firewire driver. I used the vanilla kernel and default bootloader (Chameleon 1.0.12 PC_EFI v9).

I'm willing to try iDeneb, however I would like a 10.5.6 setup and have had good results with iPC on other systems. Not sure exactly what the issue is.

A couple of questions:

1) Is is necessary to use a patched BIOS with this motherboard, or only a requirement for certain distros? The patched BIOS is version 1307, while the latest from Asus is 1901.

2) Shouldn't the latest bootloader fix the DSDT issue?

3) If I use BIOS posted above, can I upgrade iDeneb to 10.5.6 even though the BIOS is only patched for 10.5.5?

Ill try and update from 10.5.5 to 10.5.6 and let u know what happens but i doubt it will be successful. i dont see a problem flashing to the older firmware. is there something in the newer firmware that u really need?

EDIT: Just updated to 10.5.6 with no issues at all so far.

After a little more research and experimentation , I was able to get a working installation of iPC 10.5.6 by changing the SATA setting to AHCI in the BIOS and using the following setup:

* No kernel selected (use default vanilla 9.6.0 kernel)
* NVdarwin 512MB (for my nVidia 9600 GT 512MB)
* Intel ICH10 SATA Support
* ACPI Fix
* CPUS=1 One Core Fix
* Patch DSDT
* SMBIOSResolver

I was also able to get the Asus daughterboard ADI 2000B audio working using the kext I found here:

ADI AD2000b works with applehda - InsanelyMac Forum

I still need to play around to make sure everything is working ok and if I need any other fixes, but it seems to be fairly solid so far.

I guess the only issue I have is the CPUS=1 problem, which seems to be the biggest incentive for patching the BIOS. I will give the patched 1307 BIOS a go with iPC and if it doesn't work, maybe see if OMN can do a 10.5.6 patch for us

and why would u need a 10.5.6 version clearly the 10.5.5 version works with 10.5.6 as i have it installed with iDeneb.

so did u get sound working with the Supreme FX X-Fi that comes with the Maximus II Formula?

with the bios patch i didnt need any of these
* ACPI Fix
* CPUS=1 One Core Fix
* Patch DSDT
* SMBIOSResolver

im not very worried about the sound card as i use an Auzentech X-Fi Prelude for windows then i bought and Asus Xonar U1 that i can use for mac and its usb so its handy to take with me if i need.

the so called 10.5.6 fix!!!

HPET is Patched, which lets you run the stock AppleCPUPowermanagement.kext ( No Kernel Panic / Safe to update )

RTC if Fixed as well with the CPU fix

10.5.5 Mod
Only the cpu=1 is fixed.

He is asking for a small fee ($1) to cover his server costs. You can get the bios here.

Yes, the thread I linked above has the AppleHDA kext for the Supreme FX card that comes with the Maximum II Formula. Line in and out both work great.

p.s. Does anyone know of an OSX utility which allows you to control the CPU fan similar to SpeedFan for Windows? My fan is running full blast and I'd love to set it up to run based on temperature like the Mac SMC controller.

The Bios was Modded aleady
i already installed osx retail and it works nicely

This thread was exactly what I was looking for and has allowed me to have a perfect install of OSX 10.5.6 on my system which uses a Maximus II Formula mobo.

I registered to the site to say thank you for all those that facilitated the means of giving support on getting this mobo and its daughter card X-Fi sound card working properly.

I used the iDeneb v1.4 10.5.6 image with this as my system specs:

Intel Q9400 (2.66Ghz) @ 3.42Ghz
Asus Maximus II Formula Motherboard w/ 1901 BIOS by OMN (thank you!!!)
GSkill DDR-1000 RAM 2x2GB
eVGA nVidia 9800 GT
Velociraptor 150GB hdd

also used these settings in the iDeneb customized install options:

Chipset > Intel ICHx
Video > nvinject 2.1 512MB


I am n00b to OSX and have been very surprised and pleased with working in the OSX environment. I think I have been converted, thank you so much again everyone involved in this thread it provided excellent support for getting OSX installed and working properly.
