So I can either get a decent mac mini on craigslist for $450, or buy a pc laptop and install a hackintosh distro.

If I go the laptop route, I dont want to screw around with tweaking and twiddling the install- did that already trying to get several distros on my old inspiron 8500, no luck.

Is there a decent laptop for under $400 that is known to be a smooth and easy install? So I can just get up and running?

Your Dell Inspiron 8500 should work... I used iPC latest 10.5.6 and it works great. When I get a chance I will reinstall and outline what i did to get everything to work. Right now I need to get the WIFI working otherwise everything runs fine.
