Battery Cycle Count: where and how is this information stored? presumable somewhere on the battery itself... but how is it changed?

I'm able to view all battery related data with IORegistryexplorer but it cannot be changed. I am guessing AppleSmartBatteryManager.kext may play some role in the incrementing of cycle count. forgive my complete ignorance. even a nudge in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
