I can help you with the x300, since that's the card I have in my Dell laptop, and after a few days of reading and trying all kinds of solutions, I found one that works, including QE/CI. All the instructions are in this post. I tried some of the "all in one" solutions, but none of them worked. This post described doing a lot of the patching by hand, but that's what worked for me. Not too hard to follow.

A couple of pointers. First, the newer version of HexEdit mentioned in the post is now packaged as a .dmg, so you don't need Stuffit. Also, make sure you remove any "Graphics Mode" setting in your com.apple.Boot.plist, since you won't be able to change resolution in Display Preferences. I used the Callisto b003(fixed). You should get all of them, but b003 worked for my x300 card. You can get them here. Try b003, then b005, b006, and b008, but b003 will probably work for your x300 since it worked for mine.

If the first Callisto you try isn't compatible with your card, you will probably get a nasty looking display and you'll have to reboot into safe mode (-s flag) and remove the Callisto kexts before trying again. Look at the third post in the above thread on how to do this.

Once it's all working, you will probably get "mouse tearing" (it's a problem with ATI cards and how the screen is refreshed around the mouse). The solution that's worked for me is to get MouseLocator (free), set it to always on, and use a transparent .png. The transparent image and instructions are in this thread. Don't use the download link for MouseLocator from that thread, it's old. Just google for it.

Sorry I can't help with the other issue, I don't have that hardware.
