[Advice] Which OSx86 version on AMD ATI Laptop ?
Hi,
I am a newbie here. I intend to run osx86 on my Compaq R4000 laptop (AMD athlon 4000+, ATI 200m, broadcom 4306.)
Which version of OSX86 will be the best bet?

How to install on Compaq R4000
The R4000 is not ideal for osx86. However, it can be done.
Download the following:
-Kalyway 10.5.2 for AMD and Intel
-Drives_for_X200m.zip
-PCCard.10.5.2Beta2.pkg (I can't remember if you need this or not)
-IOPCCardFamily_chunnan_Leopard_rev8 (ditto for this)
Before you install:
-start windows and run system info. print out a report of your devices so you have vendor and device ID numbers for all your devices
-burn Kalyway to dvd
-burn other files to cdrom
Install:
-I recommend installing to an external USB 2.0 drive or replace the internal (XP) drive with a new drive. That way, if you need to reboot into windows, there you are.
-pay attention to the options, make sure you select the appropriate amd drivers. I think I used the kabyl kernel, but might have been speedstep.
Post Install:
-Reboot in OSX. your machine will likely be very sluggish. Don't worry, you can fix it. You'll be stuck in VESA video mode with no sound and no wireless
-insert cdrom with the drives for x200m and extract. Follow directions to get wireless working with Katana. You will need the device and vender IDs from system info, and you'll end up with ability to get the following resolutions: 640 x 480; 800 x 600; 1024 x 768; 1280 x 768, and; 1280 x 800 at various refreshes and colors.
-follow directions for broadcom wireless. You'll need vendor and device IDs from system info to get that going.
-The power manager will get the menubar battery levels going.
-If you need to (I can't remember now if I had to), Install the other two files to get PC card going.
I haven't gotten sound going yet, but it should be a relatively simple matter of inserting the dev and vend ids in the right place.
I haven't gotten sleep working yet (actually, it will go to sleep, its the waking part i have trouble with!!!), so I have to shut down everytime and restart.
Other than that, everything works. I think it is *much* more responsive than when it was an XP pro machine. It is very stable - I use it for production.

One more quirk....
Also, USB and firewire work. BUT - you have to have a device plugged in at startup, or the device won't show up. Interestingly enough, sometimes i'll get a notification that a firewire device (drive) has been added, but I can't mount the drive.
