Default Where should I buy an iPhone?

I'm looking to buy a new iPhone for my wife, but I'm a little confused. Why in the world would I pay $500 or more on eBay when I could go directly to the Apple Store online and pay $399 plus (more reasonable) shipping?

I understand that the time and knowledge it takes to jailbreak and unlock a phone could be worth a little cash to someone that doesn't know what to do. However, $100+ is a bit much, isn't it? And what about the NOT unlocked phones - the new, unwrapped ones? Why are those going so high?

BTW, I DO plan on jailbreaking and unlocking the iPhone just like the one that I use. I can't use AT&T if I wanted to - local numbers aren't available as AT&T doesn't have native service in SE Iowa. But I'll be using the new methods to unlock 1.1.3.

Just go to the Apple Store to get one. That's your best choice for a brand new phone for the lowest price especially if you can jailbreak and unlock it yourself.

The higher-than-retail prices are most likely from scam bidders. It's pretty unfortunate, IMO, that eBay has pretty much done a complete 180, from being my site of choice for online shopping, to becoming overwhelmingly infested with scammers.

Do you really not understand? Those are for people who don't have access to the US or other storebought iPhones. I just looked briefly on ebay and the prices aren't even that high, regularly going for around 440 USD. After taxes its not even much of a market. Prices are cooling i'm guessing since its easy to unlock now and supply is probably increasing.
