If your phone won't turn on at all then you can't do it. But it doesnt hurt to try - maybe the screen isn't on but the phone does work... you never know.

Plug the phone into your computer and start itunes.

Press and hold the sleep and home buttons for exactly ten seconds then let go of the sleep button and keep holding the home button - the screen will stay OFF but it will be seen in itunes as being in restore mode (actually DFU mode).

If this doesnt work try turning the phone on and even if you can't see anything happening after you have pressed the button for long enough to turn it on (if it was working) then try the above process.

If neither of these work I can't see anyway to fix your phone other than get it replaced by Apple.

What you described means it is clearly faulty so I would just go to Apple or AT&T (who won't even check the phone) and say you tried to activate this phone you got as a gift but it won't turn on and can they get it fixed.

They may use the whole "your not activated" excuse but stick to your guns and say you want to activate it and you tried but it won't turn on and you tried restoring in itunes and nothing works!

Hold down the home button and then try plugging it into your computer.. this is the more reliable way to enter recovery mode.

Also, apple will not service a phone that has not been activated with at&t. (In the US that is; respective carriers elsewhere)

Hi I've only seen the title of this topic, but it seems to me, if I've got it right, that your iPhone battery is doomed/dead.
Www.apple.com/support has a great guide on how to access the battery and where to buy a new one. Try see if this fixes your problem
If I didn't get it right and it doesn't relate to your problem at all, then I am sorry for the inconvenience

Thanks for the replies, guys, this is the latest update:

it turned out that the phone has indeed been activated by AT&T, however the apple guy ask for the activator's informaton which I don't have. Mind you know I bought this second-handed, (who knows how many hands already lol. ).
So what do you guys think in this case?
Can I(my friend actually, ) just say that the phone was bought second hand and we don't know that guy's name?
Is apple's warranty transferrable? Never bought an apple produce before.
    Thanks a lot.

It seems I may have to do that since I can't get service from Apple

Hope it's just the battery, not the com or logical board.
