Has anyone managed to get a video signal out of an iPhone?
I know there are adaptors out there for iPhones and iPod touches that claim to offer video out and have read the pinouts on pinouts.ru however I have been unable to get a video line out.
I am in the process of making an AV adaptor from an old Firewire dock type connector and as fas as I know video out should be on pin 8.
Does anyone have any further information please?!

I don't have a ton of info for you but according to THIS PAGE AT APPLE, only the brand new dock works with the iphone for video. Maybe a pin was not connected in the old docks or it was changed somehow?? Hope it helps.

It's not about a Pin, but more likely because they added a new chip that activates the video only when it detects an iPhone-iTouch compatible product.

you should get video out from jack connector from dock, but it works only with 1.1.1 or higher as i know. you just need jack to 3x rca cable.

You should definetly go for the Apple universel dock + Apple video cable.
As XianLi points out there is a built in check chip in the apple video cable.
I´ve already tried connecting an Ipod Video cable to the iphone standard dock. Nothing happens. Its propablt the cable, but resonably also the dock blocking the signal.
However on my test board I can´t really "see" the check signal that should be comming from the phone. This in my mind indicates that the "chip" should be or is a simple short/resistor connecting two pins.
I havent recievd an original aple cable though, so this is SO not verified.

btw. Im working on perpetual video out, which is not the same as the standard video out..

I have 1.0.2 but baseband is upgraded to 04.XX. I was wondering if apple TV oit cable will work with my phone. Two scared to upgrade to 1.1.1 unless it is really neccessary. Even with upgrading to 1.1.1 I am not sure it will work with TV out cable if there is a hardware change in new 1.1.1 phones.

Wow; thanks for all the replies guys! sounds like we're getting a little closer to making our own video adaptors!?
I think the resistor in the dock/adaptor scenario is more likely than a micro of some kind as the production costs of having a dedicated chip would be high and and unnecessary.
Then again who knows the lengths that Apple will go to stitch up their accessory line!?

Anyway, if anyone does figure this one out, or wants to reverse engineer an Apple video compatible dock?
I'd happily do it myself, but they aren't available here in Australia yet and I'm determined to make one.

BTW; running unlocked 1.1.2 on Telstra Aus.

First of all the video support is only 1.1.1 and higher, should get video output from under iPod in your iPhone. Second of all you should get video out from the dock connector 3.5'' plugin with 3.5'' to 3x RCA cable (apple calls it apple video cable). But actualy cable is cable. It can't have any kind of blocking device in it "checking if it's real apple or not". The thing is that apple video cable is built other way, than the usual rca cables. Apple has switched the video and audio (as yellow is usualy video then, in random jack to rca cable you have to put either red or white pin to yellow input). As i'm known, it should work. At least this has been tested on some video playing iPods.

@alvar: Im running 1.1.1 so video out should work. I just tried the 3xRCA (non apple).
Its not working, tried all of the jacks in the video in port.
Either the universal dock is the trick or else is the cable rigged in some way.

btw. I think not the Ipods in general can be compared to the touch and the iphone.

The trick is in the cable because it works without the Dock.

I tried tonight to solder a RCA (pin 23 = composite video out, pin 29 = common ground)

Then using different resistors between pin 10 and ground.

The iTouch doesn't propose me to use the TV out.



So if anyone out there has the original Apple Video Cable and the dock and can probe (with a multimeter) the yellow RCA to see where it is linked (which pins) on the dock connector.

And also probe the pin 10 and ground (pin 29) to measure the resistance value (cable unplugged)
