Ok guys, i've got both Composite and Component cable.

First thing important: If you plan to buy a Composite Cable, just don't.

The Component cable is doing the job of both of them. Using the 'Pb' (blue RCA/Cinch) as the Composite AV (yellow RCA/Cinch). So you can use it as Component or Composite (EDIT: Composite only with the old iPod generation) when needed.

Second thing: I'm gonna hack into and report soon.

Thanks for this information, I didn't think component would work as composite and was putting me off getting one.

I tried the Component Cable with different iPod (5G, nano...) it works only as Composite.

The same cable plugged on a Touch or iPhone doesn't send a Composite Signal, but only Component.
You still can get a signal by using the Y (Green RCA/Cinch plug) as monochrome composite.


I'm pretty sure the chips in the cable are responsible with this.

Only the iPod Classic, iPod nano released at the same time as the iPod Touch do have Component Output.

The old generation uses the same pin "Pb" (Blue RCA/Cinch plug) to transmit the Composite AV signal.

The Component Cable tells the iPhone-iTouch to send Component signal (probably using the serial input).

Both cable are the same except they identify differently.

Hi guys. Sorry i've been really busy at work... u know.. everything that we've postponed due to the fact that it should "just be done by christmas time" is really kicking back now.. :-(
Anyway, Ihavent been able to measure the ICs yet... wont do it until after xmas.
@XianLi: I think that the main reason why the cable behaves differently is due to the fact that the pins are different within the ipods. The cable that ive bought (apple composite AV cable) has the AV lines going straight through from the ipod connector to the cable ends.
what i mean is: The cable is just behaving like a cable, but the signal transmitted is diferent for the different ipod. The cable has a separate way of telling the ipod/iphone that it is connected.

A-HA! I Just realized that if you could make this work on a video ipod, then the "tag" must be backwards compatible.....

As XianLi said, it won't act as a composite on a iPhone/iTouch

ooohhhh ok thank you for clarifying that for me! Ok looks like I'll be keeping composite instead of component considering video coming from an iPod doesn't really need component.. Plus the majority of people out there would have some kind of device that takes composite over component.. Thanks fellas

After the update 1.1.3 the iPhone TV out function works with the older "iPod" universal docks with S-Video and the older "iPod" AV cables.

Wow that's great news as I don't have a component video input. So jsut to conform you can use a classic RCA (composite) plug like this one on the iPhone?
