It still won't be recognized. It charges perfectly via Firewire and the problem is not with my iTunes because I have uninstalled and reinstalled different versions 5 times. This all started after putting my iPhone into one of those Stereo-Dock things which was probably meant for iPods only (DOH!). The message this device is not compatible showed up and that was the end of that.
Did you guys ever figure out what was wrong with your phones?
It is unlikely that putting your iPhone into an older style stereo dock will have caused this problem. Can't say 100% for sure as some manufacturers might have made a device which does not follow the dock connector standards properly.
Was it charging before you erased all settings/contents?

Olethros, thanks for responding! The reason I point out the dock stereo is because 10 minutes before I put it in it was functioning perfectly and after it wasn't. Also, the compatibility message popped up and asked if I would like to go into airplane mode. The only way my iPhone charged before the "erase all settings" was via Firewire. Now, however, when I connect it to my laptop, the Pineapple logo starts flashing (which I assume means that it's charging) and when I unplug it, it stops. There must be some kind of connection between my iPhone and my laptop, but it does not appear at all (under any category) in the Device Manager when I connect it. Thanks for helping me out!

It is possible - but unlikely, the later iPhone models reportedly have a bit more protection against incorrect power from the dock connector.
However, it is more likely that it just got confused. Do you have a proper USB iPhone wall charger? Can you force it into DFU mode via that?

Unfortunately, my phone will not charge via a proper USB wall charger. I can get it into DFU mode, but it is still not recognized even when I put it into DFU mode. Or recovery mode (Preved cartoon).

Gents,
is it possible that there is a problem with Logic board? or is it software? I have read all your comments. I have 3 iphones. 2 work fine with my laptop but the 3rd one is not being recognised by USB. I replaced the docking adaptor and still the same problem. it is being charged with wall socket no problem. i know it is not my laptop beacuse the other 2 work fine.
so any solution folks?

Hey guys, the answer for your question is quite simple the reason of problems with charging and usb connection is respond one EMI Filter ( located near main connector ). As his names means its EMI filter and its chip which is responsible for damp electromagnetic stabs, if its broken ( for example due by ESD ) simply switching from conductor to resistance rather blockade of impulses which is means it has to be replaced if not any " shaman practice " will not help. What do I need to replace this element? First of all this micro bga filter has pads under himself, so its mean you can't solder it by solder iron. You have to use hot air rework station or infrared rework station, both of them heat whole board which meld tins and makes you able to pick up the filter and give possibility to replace with new one / working one.
If there is someone which has problem with his iPhone / iPod Touch as is in thread ( And don't have opportunities to replace this element ), I can help with repair it in Chicago area. More at private.

Fixed!
Okay, I don't know why this is, but this fixed the issue for me on two devices and a non iOS device.
Buy a stronger USB charger!
Mine is a Rhino USB Power Adapter (Dual Port)
Output: 5v, 2Amp with 1port in use, 1Amp each with two ports in use
I found that the batteries were too low, so even though the screen would display, the system was not really working at full capacity. Just give it a try on your device, if you are in CA, use Fry's Rental

i had this same problem and its very frustrating when your in recovery mode
what your going to want to do if your using a laptop is shut the laptop down
unplug it from the wall and unplug the the battery from the laptop
leave it like this for 30 seconds and then plug everything back should be fine
its that easy lol

If there is no solution working for you guys, look at the little component in the area I made in black in this picture

They are verry fragile and some are sometimes broken or gone, and this is sometimes the origin of problem with itunes or charge!
