In windows check at control panel > administrative tools > services.
Verify that applemobiledevice service is running. For apple users, take a look here

If it isn't running, try to restart it. If that doesn't work try uninstalling itunes and installing it again. Check one of these links for a proper how to.

If nothing helps, try reinstalling the OS.

If applemobildedevice service was running and itunes didn't recognize it in dfu, it is a hardware problem.

Try, changing the usb port or the usb cable.

If nothing of above helped out, you need a tech support for the evaluation if the problem is at the USB flex cable or at the logic board.

A collegue of mine has the same problem right now. I'm going to believe it's a hardware issue. He can recharge it with a iPod firewire adapter, but i told him not to do. Firewire is a dangerous thing on a iPhone, i read.
Nobody a solution? I had a connection with SSH. Some files maybe he messed up?
The problem came when he updated Installer. He's still running on 1.1.1.
I thought that could be the problem, so i erased Installer and replaced the old version.
    Nothing helps...

I am also starting to believe this is harware, even though i do not understand why it cannot go into DFU or recovery mode. A hardware problem should have no interference with the IPhone into these modes....

I am waiting now for a post that explains how to totally revirginize an iphone using purely SSH. Once the phone is back to its original status and if USB still does not work then i'll be totally convinced that it is hardware...
