Unhappy [Unexpected Event] iPhone went up in smoke...literally

So I was all set to HW unlock my iPhone. Bought the special tools from iFixit (more on that later), had all the software installed, was ready to go. So yeah, all of these guides showing you how to open the iPhone case make it look MUCH easier than it is. "Press up gently on the metal backing and you'll hear a click." Never heard a click, either with the metal backing, which I never got off, or with the small black panel. After finally getting the black panel off, I set about trying to get the metal panel off, and evidently punctured the battery and the iPhone just started spewing smoke. I left the room because I thought it was going to explode, but it didn't. So that's that. Maybe it just wasn't meant to be...god knows I've blown who knows how many days worth of hours tinkering, etc, over the last few months...maybe it's a good thing.

Back to the iFixit tools--DON'T BUY THEM--they're crap. You're better off just buying a nice sturdy guitar pick.

Anyone think I could sell this thing somewhere for parts?

I think if you unsolder the battery and try it plugged on usb, i might still work.

If it is the case, just buy a new battery

acually the same happened to me and my friend when we tried to do the HW unlock yesterday ,, luckly o just put the little black cover back and threw the phone in the street a couple of times and went to apple and made up a awesome story how their product just heated up and was almost to explode so the gave me a new one , but unfotrunattly its 1.1.3 preinstalled ,, but atleast its better than a bricked one,,, so u might wanna give it a try ,,, but the apple guy tols me if you came again with the same problem i will not exchange it LOL ,, somehow i think he knew that i was HW unlocking it ;p

    Kar,

yeah, I had thought of that, but they've already replaced the damn thing once (not my fault last time), so I doubt they'll do it if I stroll in again. Plus there are clearly visible signs that I was trying to get in it AND the entire screen is totally fried. Anyone think I could at least sell some of the parts? The camera, chrome ring, etc.?

Hahaha ... same thing happen to me to. Tried to pry open the case with flat head screwdriver and i think i punture the battery. Can see sparks and smoke coming out. Then I chicken out in doing the H/W unlock.
