    Default [Touchscreen] Dead Strip > How to Dismiss a Menu ?

    hi guys,
    you see... i have the death strip problem, and because of it i could not access my home screen anymore as i could not input the passcode.. so i made a restore to 1.1.4, now i am able to go to the home screen, but can't click anything as the usual "Edit home Screen information" is there, and the Dissmiss button is right on top of the death strip.
    Any ideas on how to dissmiss this menu so as to be able to use the home screen?

    Ok, here you go. You have to have SSH/SFTP access to your iPhone. Dont know if you are on Windows or Mac, so here are the instructions for both.
    On a Mac you need the software Property List Editor (comes with the Developer tools on the system DVD). On Windows you have to edit the file with the help of a text editor.

    Use WinSCP (Windows) or Cyberduck/Fugu/Transmit to connect via SFTP into the iPhone. Goto
    /private/var/mobile/Library/Preferences
    The file you have to edit is:
    com.apple.springboard.plist

    Make a backup first on the iPhone, rename to something like
    com.apple.springboard_backup.plist

    Copy the original to your Mac/PC.

    On a Mac start Property List Editor and open the file. Look for

    SBDidShowReorderText

    You will probably not find it. If not present, create a new child with this name, class is "Boolean" and value is "Yes" (without quotemarks). Save the file and copy/replace it back to the iPhone. Restart the iPhone and the Windows will not show up again.
    Just in case SBDidShowReorderText is present, set its value from "NO" to "YES".

    It's a bit more complicate on Windows cause no Plist Editor is available. There is an easy workaround. First get/download the programm "EditPad Lite". Google for it, it's free.

    Then rename the extension of com.apple.springboard.plist to txt so it reads com.apple.springboard.txt. Use EditPad Lite to open the file. It probably looks like this (maybe some different things in there.

    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
    <key>SBBacklightLevel</key>
    <real>0.5</real>
    <key>SBLanguageRestart</key>
    <false/>
    <key>SBLastSystemVersion</key>
    <string>1.1.4</string>
    <key>System</key>
    <string>NTSC</string>
    </dict>
    </plist>
    To make it work you have to insert the following (only the stuff thats marked blue).

    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
    <key>SBBacklightLevel</key>
    <real>0.5</real>
    <key>SBDidShowReorderText</key>
    <true/>
    <key>SBLanguageRestart</key>
    <false/>
    <key>SBLastSystemVersion</key>
    <string>1.1.4</string>
    <key>System</key>
    <string>NTSC</string>
    </dict>
    </plist>
    Save the changes in EditPad Lite and close the program. Rename the extension of the file from .txt to .plist. Copy back the file to the iPhone and restart.

    One note: Windows programm notepad wont work, will screw up things.

    Hope that helps, tried it on my iPhone.

    Best, volkspost

    Great explanation volkspot,

    I have the same problem that betenix had, but there is a catch, however. Since I cannot dismiss that crazy menu (which I had always thought of as lame and now I've come to hate), I cannot log in the wireless, or see the IP address of the phone. Basically the only thing that I can do is listen to musc (on alphabetical order) and answer calls.

    I was thinking that to modify this .plist without SSHing I would need some software such as iFuntastic. This software however isn't available to 2.0 yet. So is there any other way to update this new and modified plist file? I mean, is there a way to put it in the pwned firmware update? Or is there another piece of software such as iFuntastic that works with the 2.0 firmware?

    thanks

    If you are on Windows, simply use IBrickr (works with 2.0 as well) and replace the file, that did the trick for me when I had a same problem. For Mac you could simply use cyberduck but then you would have to remove the wireless security so that the wireless is connected without having to touch anything thus allowing you to ssh.

    If you are having problems find the IP address for your IPhone, the simple way is to check your router, it will display the connected devices and that would be your computer and IPhone or else just try some of the common ones such as 192.168.1.2 and so on depending on your router settings.

    Default volkspost saves the day

    Hello volkspost!

    Thank you for saving me a whole lot of hassel! the incredibly anoying popup of rearrange icons went away! Thank yo again so much!
    My problem was that I had a dead strip on the screen so I couldn't press the dismiss button!

    So easy to do it when u explain it that simple! I'll bet that there's a lot of hours behind the screen to figure that out!
    thanks again!

    Default 2G phone, firmware 3.1.2

    hey volkspost,
    you seem to be the authority on this I was wondering if you could help me out. I have a 2G phone that I've updated to 3.1.2, and I'm getting this whole "can't press the dismiss button" issue. I want to edit the file as you've described, but I can't even get to the private folder on Terminal. I'm using Mac OSX of course. Can you please tell me how to do this, step by step?

    Thanks a zillion,
    Linda Trapani
