Default Stuck on charging please wait screen

Have no idea what was done to it...got it REALLY CHEAP.

When I plugged it in, came up on restore screen, connected to iTunes and attempted a 1.0.2 restore.

Gave error 1603, and now it's stuck on a charging please wait screen.
    Battery indicator doesn't move.....
Voltage @ red & black wires it 4.13 volts when it's plugged in.
    .01 when unplugged

I can't get this thing to do anything now, is the battery just toast?

Any idea if I can use a different battery of some kind to try to get it working again, before shelling out for an iPhone battery...

It was broken before 1.1.1 came out, so not a firmware/update issue.

Hi there, I'm in the same situation - I just got a phone pretty cheap and the exact same thing happens - when I plug it in, it stays stuck at the "Charging... please wait" screen. I've had it plugged in for almost 2 days now and when I unplug it it doesn't respond at all. Also, I've had the problem of it cycling the Apple logo. So I'm guessing that it's two problems - that it needs a new battery and that it needs to be restored. This is my first iPhone (I got duped into buying it - the guy told me it had just died before he brought it to me and I was giddy about buying one.... go figure). Can anyone shed some light on this for me? Will buying a new battery make a difference?

    Thanks

If the battery is completely discharged, the phone needs to be plugged in for approx. 15min before it will boot up (which it will do automatically). If it takes longer than that, you have hardware issues, most likely in the comm board, and possibly the logic board too. I've seen a fair number of phones with these issues. The only way I've been able to revive these were to replace the comm boards (sometimes logic boards too). Replacing the battery will not make any difference.
