Mmn ok the fact that you have previously used paper to wedge the sim against the contqcts suggest you have either miss aligned a contact in the phone, worn the contacts with the tray scraping as you slide it back in or ..fingers crossed.... You have simply worn the sim contacts on the card itself ( though its quite noticeable as they dont look too smart when they are that worn.. First to do.. Try another sim... If need be re wedge it with paper just to see if you get contact. If no joy, then its gonna have to be dissasemble and physicaly check all contacts are still valid. If they are all present then check the alignment and make sure they all work by manually pressing a valid sim against them and check it goes. If all else fails... You still have a shiny ipod... At least you can upgrade to 2.0 wthout worrying about fking your bb/needing to unlock. If its fkd you could always ebay it and get a sh!tty plastic 3g!
Sorry no quick fix i guess but inserting foreign objects in crevises always results in heart ache or a hospital visit

If you are good with iron skills, try to replace SIM reader. If not, look for a new board.
But do not think you have many options this time. And hey, you have done the hardest step so far, which is to open your phone.

if your a uk user......http://www.iphone-repairs.co.uk/spares.html - you need the comm board... £76.38 -though it looks like they do ship outside UK
if your based else where..? i don't know.. someone is breaking an iphone in the flea market section
http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=44172
alternatively.. chuck it on ebay clearly detailing the fault.. show its repairable and someone will most definitley pay good money for it.. then with your new good money... go to the shop and but a legit plastic 3g on a new contract.. just don't go poking paper in the sim tray

Sorry for bumping, but I'm in the same situation as the OP.
I want to attempt to solder a pin back into the reader.
Are there any tips or suggestions? I have another Logic/Comm board, but I don't really know if it works or not. And I don't want to change my IMEI and stuff...
From looking at the board itself, it seems to be a pretty hard process? I can't even see a connection to where I should solder against... -_-
