[Project] Building a 32GB iPhone
Hello everyone,
I had a crazy idea : what if i could desolder the nand chip of the iPhone and solder instead a 32 or more chip.
I know it sounds crazy but I really want to try this as an experiment.
I looked over the web for nand chips and i found this one : link
It is a 32GB nand chip TSOP 48-pin, so it has all the same specifications as the original chips.
How can I know if it will work?
Does someone has the datasheet for the original nand chip so that we could compare?
Is anyone interrested to try that with me?
Thanks

Aren't the NAND chips in iphone BGA if so nothing for the home to desolder and solder new BGA in place.
If swap of chip is possible you may only be able to access 16 MB if firmware controlled as well.

The nand chip is not BGA :
It is the chip at the bottom of the picture, it has visible and soldable pin... By the way there is great ways to solder BGAs at home (search instructable for that).
So is there anyone with enough knowledge of the iphone software/hardware to tell me if the chip i talked about is compatible with the iPhone please?
Thanks,

Why not just take a 32mb one from the iPod touch?

Can you replace the whole logic board you can get a 32 gb one from ifixit.com
-
The Logic boards of the iPhone and the iPod Touch are very very differnt, they can't be swapped at all.
The iPod Touch doesn't have any 32GB chip : it uses the same chip as iPhone but has two slots. This is the reason why iPod Touch always have twice the amount of memory the iPhone has.
I really need to find out if the chip in my first post is usable...

I have found at Samsung the reference of a nand chip 32GB that seems to be exactly the same that is used in 16GB in iPhones : link
Does anyone know how to order at samsung's ?

You cannot order one or two chips, you need to be a wholesale'er to do this. Samsung never sells chips under 1000 pieces. Ask your local hardwaredealer if he can order some chips or if he had one of your need.

Some companies will sell small quantities for prototyping purposes. I would look into it if you're that interested. I've seen these hardware development kits from various IC manufacturers.

Are you sure the phone's firmware will recognize the 32GB chip? Anyways good luck with this project and keep us updated
