Default Problem. 1st Gen Screen issue (lines shown on screen)

    Hello,

I'm hoping somebody can help me out with an issue I'm having with my 1st gen iphone. Last week some grey horizontal lines appeared on the screen. I first thought it was a hardware issue, but then each day the lines changed a little bit; changed location, length etc. So it's not a dead pixel issue. So I thought it was just software issue. I have the phone unlocked (I'm in canada), so I upgraded the firmware to 2.0; but this didn't fix it. So I completely restored the firmware to 1.1.4 and before I unlocked it the screen still showed the lines (I've restored it numerous times). So it doesn't appear to be due to the fact it's unlocked. But I can't figure it out.

Has anybody had any similar issues? (I hope it's not a hardware thing because it's not that easy for me to get that fixed here.)

Here are some pics of what I mean (sorry they aren't that clear). One thing to note is I had to actually take a photo of the phone because I tried using a screen shot, but the lines are not shown in the screen shot! (which maybe points to hardware). Also you see these lines as the phone is starting up too (as shown in the pics)

    thanks in advanced.

Hi, sorry about your problem. But if the issue remains after a few restores/upgrades, it looks like a hardware problem to me.

I'm moving this thread to the hardware section. Hopefully, you'll get some help there. Good luck

Can the pictures be a little bit bigger next time

I agree it looks like a screen hardware fault

Looks like its time for an iPhone 3G .

Seriously though, that is a hardware issue. It may not be "stuck pixels" but it definitely is a screen malfunction of some kind.

If you were planning on fixing it, then the issue gets a little sticky. The problem could lie in the LCD itself, but there is also a chance that the issue is the chip that drives the LCD, which would require a main board replacement. If the lines really change location, namely, they move up and down the screen, then it's most likely the video chip. If they mostly stay put where they're pictured and they only really get shorter or longer by a few pixels sometimes, then its most likely the LCD.

It could also be a loose connection, but the 1st gen iPhone is an absolute nightmare to open (or so i've heard) so I would recommend repair as a last resort only.

    Thanks for the replies.

The location hasn't change vertically, just horizontally (well a little vertically, because there were 3 lines at first, but now only 2 side by side). when if first appeared it was on the right side of the screen but only about 1cm long. Then it moved over to the left side and a lot longer. It seems to change a little everyday.

Since it's an unlocked phone (I.e. warranty issue), could I just restore it to the factory settings (I.e. locked) and send it back like that for warranty?

I have a very similar problem, 1 grey line extending horizontally a bit more almost every night. Sometimes it retracts or is broken, but it has been getting longer over the course of the past week.

I have dealt with many LCDs in many forms, but have not seen something like this happen before. They are not what would traditionally be considered 'stuck,' because they are not single rgb colors, they are all the same color grey in one horizontal line.

To rule out jailbreaking and unlocking concerns, I fully restored everything with no effect.
