That's an awesome idea... it depends on how much of the detector is done in software vs hardware, and probably isn't too powerful anyway, but it would be wonderful to have in a pinch.

Unfortunately the proximity sensor is not suitable over 10cm.
That's why i went to an external hardware solution (which is really precise @ 80 feet).

This new project is better, though. Would be cool if it had support for logitech harmony code files.

You need to own a compatible PocketPC and buy the software + dongle solution from Griffin (TotalRemote), but it is not sold anymore.

iCouchPotatoe is already autonomous for controlling Devices (able to be controlled by IR remote control).

You just learn/capture (with a PC or Mac) all the codes from the device's remote you want to control, send them to the phone, plug the Dongle and just use the phone as a remote.

I already use my iPhone or iTouch as an Apple remote :)

Maybe I misinterrpreted his post but I read his suggestion as a simple bluetooth to ir gateway. There are some very cheap and simple bluetooth solutions available these days.

Some very close to Apple's choice...CSR BlueCore4-Ext. The Dev board is not too bad ($100 USD) and just the chip is ~$5 USD.

Perhaps for Phase II? :)

Unfortunately, there is no documentation from Apple to use the crippled built-in Bluetooth on the iPhone.

Great project XianLi. I love my universal remote on my PPC. Would love to see this work on the iPhone.

An application to make the iphone function as a bluetooth remote for the PS3 would be hot :)
