out of warranty 2g with dead strip
I have an out of warranty 2g with a dead strip problem on the bottom half of the screen.
According to Apples knowledge base (iPhone: Troubleshooting touchscreen response), it sounds like they'll replace out of warranty iPhones with the dead strip problem.
But when I went to the Apple Store, they told me my iPhone did not qualify because the serial number is not one that is qualified for a free replacement. They would not tell me what range of serial numbers qualify, only stating that an internal memo listed which phones can and cannot be replaced for free.
Anybody here with any knowledge of the valid serial numbers?

I was not aware of the serial number detail, and am unable to confirm it.
My experience at the apple store in person is that the guy next to me had a 2G iphone out of warranty, that did not work, he could not make or receive calls. The Genius gave him 2 choices, pay 199 for a replacement 2G iPhone with No contract extension, or, upgrade to a 3G iPhone for 199, with a 2 year contract.
Seems to me its cheaper to buy a replacement screen off ebay for 135 including the tool
I then called the local apple retail store to make an appointment for evaluation and replacement, thanks to your link, of my 2G with a bad screen strip. They told me the replacement would Not be free, and they had never heard of the serial number restriction.
They pointed me to this page

Original iPhone Out-of-Warranty Service

I went to two Apple Stores and called 1-800-MY-IPHONE twice. Each time I was told that there is a private internal memo to Apple employees that only phones with a serial number within a certain range that have a dead strip problem will be replaced for free. They would not tell me what that range is. All others will be charged $199 for either a 2G or 3G replacement.
I was hoping someone working for Apple knows what that serial number range is and PM me.
