Default No USB com/charging after accidental iPhone 2G upgrade

A friend of mine has an unlocked/jailbroken iPhone 2G (firmware 2.0?) that he accidentally upgraded to 3.1.2 through iTunes. Now the Iphone won't be recognized through USB and won't even charge! Now the iPhone battery has depleted and it won't even turn on. Could this be the result of the upgrade or might it rather be a hardware failure? Please advise me.

    Generally a hardware failure.

    Try basic troubleshooting techniques

    different usb cable
wall charger instead of computer (or USB powered hub)

Thanks, tried basic troubleshooting and different cables/chargers. If it cannot be a software fault (from upgrading), I guess the connector port or some chip on logic board might be fried/broken. Is there any way to troubleshoot this?

Can you get it to detect power at all? If you can't get it to do that you can't really restore the iPhone reliably. Both DFU and recovery mode generally require power to enter them manually.

Have you checked the dock connector socket for physical obstructions?

Did not try DFU or recovery mode, but I guess it wouldn't have worked anyway (when USB doesn't work). Connector seems ok, guess I'll have to open it up and try to find the defect.

I would not really advise that unless you have some solid experience, these devices are tricky to open up. Try an iPhone dock.
