I would love to have someone open up access to this. The possibilities are endless. USB card readers, usb to serial cables for cisco console access, camera connections, usb to ethernet.
I mean, it is basically giving the iPhone a USB port.

Currently there's little known about the camera connector in general.
I tried looking into it as a usb host controller before, but it seems it might be limited to simple functionality.
Since I don't actually have one, nor the time to dive into at the moment, if you guys can dig up pictures of the parts inside, and especially part numbers, it could be possible to deduce what it's actually doing.
oh, and having a breakout box sniffing the wires to observe what happens when you're uploading to a 5th gen ipod would be extremely helpful.

Sorry to bump this but I might have something to offer. I can get a hold of about a dozen of the Camera Connectors for free and I'm willing to donate them to people who want to do research into this. Since the iPhone is now open to so many things, I guess it should be worth the try. But I don't know if software only hack will work. According to the iPod connector pinout, the Camera Connector seems to enable 5V on a normally 3.3V pin. So if the Camera Connector needs 5V to work (logically since USB is 5V), we'd need to mod it too. But that's probably possible without opening the iPhone since one of the pins already provides 5V.
I already tried it on the iPhone 2G and it says "This accessory is not suitable for this iPhone." or something like that. I tried connecting a USB stick but nothing happened ofcourse.
