Default iPhone won't boot after using " erase all data "

    Hello

My 3Gs had OS 4.0 on it and recently I got iPhone4, so I decided to wipe all data on the 3Gs and give it to my wife.

The phone was factory unlocked and I jailbroke it.

After clicking on the " erase all data " button on the phone, it went for a reboot and never came back.

It's stuck on the apple logo screen with the spinning wheel.

Sometimes the wheel spins like forever and nothing happens and some other times the wheel stops spinning.

I tried to kick it out of DFU or recovery mode ( as I don't know if it went to which one ) with no luck.

I tried to connect it to iTunes for a restore but it doesn't recognize it.

forgot to mention that the battery was 20% when I pressed the "erase all data" button and after 5 or 10 minutes it restarted and showing a low battery mode ( when it shows that the phone is charging but can't be turned on ), of course I tried charging the phone but it's still the same, either spinning wheel with apple logo or low battery screen.

    Any ideas ?

This is pretty normal. Erase all content and settings does exactly what it says. It erases your device - including the operating system and with it all settings. We get a similar question nearly every day.

99% of the time it isn't what the person actually wanted to do, and most users do this without adequate preparation.

The single biggest roadblock is that Apple deliberately restricts the ability to restore older iOS versions once a new version is released. For example right now you can only restore iOS 4.2.1 onto a 3GS or newer.

The only 100% way to get around this is if you have backed up your SHSH (unique per device/iOS combination) before Apple stopped signing them.

This is why you can't restore iOS 4.0 again

This is because you aren't really in DFU or recovery mode. Your iPhone is trying to boot up normally but can't find the root file system. (all that remains after your type of erase is the NOR images - LLB, iBoot etc)

This is just a minor extra complication, always have the phone fully charged when performing jailbreak or erase/restore operations - otherwise you can have unpredictable results.

In this cae, simply let the phone charge - then force it into DFU mode (preferably with an official apple USB wall charger) and unless you have a 4.0 SHSH saved with Cydia or locally via TinyUmbrella - you have no choice but to restore 4.2.1

If you desperately don't want 4.2.1 (or want to prevent baseband update) then you should not restore anything (instead wait and ask for specific advice)

Olethros, Thank you very much for your help

I really kind of panicked when I got that and Frankly didn't know that erase all data will erase the OS as well.

Thank you once again and next time I will search the stickies first.

I have already answered this question earlier in this same thread. Do you think the answer for you will be much more different?

You don't have a SHSH for iOS 4.1 and Apple stopped signing SHSH requests for iOS 4.1 on December 2nd.

As you have an iPod touch (no baseband/unlock to worry about), the only negative about updating to iOS 4.2.1 is that if you want to jailbreak, it's a tethered jailbreak (for now).

There are no tools available today that allow you to restore iOS 4.1 onto your device. So you can either have a non-bootable device or restore to 4.2.1
