I hope that Apple will enable these features for iPhone 1.0 owners, and not just for the next version of the iPhone.

Yeah, everybody is happy with EDGE until they see how HSDPA "flies".

Btw: one feature I really expected from Apple on the iPhone was the possibility to buy iTunes stuff directly from the iPhone, incl. downloading it to the iPhone.
Now I realize why Apple didn't offer this feature: you can't offer such a feature without mobile broadband and very high download speeds. It is a pitty.
Also disappointing: the pathetic 2 MP camera without video capture capability and the missing A2DP bluetooth profile, a MUST for an iPod-like gadget.

That's true. 1.8Mbit is like DSL in your pocket. And T-Mobile GER plans to upgrade their network up to 7.0Mbit 'til 2009. Who need's DSL

But, that doesn't mean, that Apple will introduce a HSDPA-capable iPhone. If we are lucky, then there will be a 3G-iPhone for 2008. But again, what about battery life?

I'm a power user and I'm pretty happy that my phones have a soft-switch to disable 3G for the sake of battery life.

Frankly, the speeds don't bother me much. Sure it'd be nice to have huge bandwidth in my pocket, but I firmly believe that a) This isn't a technological limitation, it's a business/political one, and b) US carriers are such absolute assclowns that any serious speed like you describe would only be available to 0.005% of the population due to the ridiculous monthly charges that AT&T or whomever would impose on us. Might work great in Europe or the Far East, but here in the states we'd get a technologically advanced, beautiful phone that we'd all hide in our sock drawers so we wouldn't get charged $500/month.

I can work around everything else, but I *would* dearly love to have a GPS in there, and one available to software. Is it confirmed that the iPhone does/does not include GPS capability? That's pretty much the only thing that would cause me buyer's regret if a GPS-enabled iPhone came out in 3 months.
