Default iPhone with half-broken screen; what to do with it?

recently i dropped my iphone 2G and the screen cracked. surprisingly the upper half still works and is responsive but the lower half of the screen is not working anymore and doesn't react to tapping.
as of now, i use it on my stereo as a big shuffle ipod since the only thing i can do is double-tap the home button and play/pause or change song.
unfortunately the iphone is in airplane mode so i can't connect to it but it is jailboken.

surely there are better ways of using this thing in its current state. could i install a vnc server so at least i could remotely manage it? or could i stream music to it and use it quasi as a airport express? but how could i do that given that it's in airplane mode now? what other uses would could i let this mini-computer do before declaring it dead?

i would be very much interested what you guys have to propose or explain me how i could regain access to my handicapped iphone with airplane mode enabled

Doesn't it exit Airplane Mode when you reset it (Power- and Homebutton)? And have you considered a repair yet? Here is a guide for exchanging the display assembly, with new ones going pretty cheap on eBay.

    thanks for the reply.
i tried resetting it and it stays in airplane mode. i cant enter in the main menu either because the iphone is pin protected which i can't enter because the display doesn't recognize the input where the numbers are.

repairing it was my first thought. unfortunately here in switzerland i didn't find anyone who repairs 2G iphones. and repairing it myself.... well let's just say that with this option, the iphone would end up dead for sure...

Well... A short Google search results in MANY hits for iPhone repair services in switzerland, even in Zürich itself!

yes, i've seen those and even talked to them. most of them only provide service for 3G iphones and the few that actually list repair services for 2G iphones either do not offer it anymore after the 3G was introduced or are insanely expensive. the one i talked to wanted 400 CHF (ca. 360 €) for the exchange of the display. they told me that the old iphone is way more complicated to exchange the screen cause its glued or something.

    Default Any ideas, anyone?

I have the same problem of a non-responsive iPhone 2G touch screen.
I've sucked it up and upgraded to a 3G, but still have this marvelous piece of engineering sitting there begging to be put to a new use.

Hasn't anyone got some suggestions for what could be done with an old iPhone whose touch-screen doesn't work?

I suppose the first question might be: Is there a way to jailbreak it and install apps without being able to use the touch screen? If VNC were installed already then I suppose I could control it from my computer, but right now it's in a fresh restored factory state.

As another idea for use, could it be set up as a remote mini-monitor/display for my computer?
