Exclamation iPhone 3GS - Peculiar problem!

    Hi,

I have had an iPhone 3gs 16GB for about 6 months now. It's a factory unlocked model from out of the country and had been running like a dream till day before. Here is what happened - my wi-fi signal dropped to zero (even though i was standing next to router) and my network signal changed to NO SERVICE. I restarted the phone and it showed me the "Connect to iTunes" logo on the screen. iTunes couldn't read the data on the phone and asked for me to restore the phone, which i did. There was NO problem in the restore process until the phone required rebooting. As soon as it rebooted, i was stuck on the "Emergency calls only" screen with a NO SERVICE sign where the signal strength is supposed to be (Note: The sim card wasn't removed). Well i didn't think much of it then and came back to it after a long party at night and a good night's sleep.

Once on, it showed me the "No SIM" sign instead of the "NO SERVICE" sign and asked me to put a valid sim inside, which i did. Everything was back to normal and the phone was restored perfectly. It's when i tried to copy all the apps and music on the phone that it restarted in the middle and i've been stuck at the "Emergency calls only" screen since then.

I have tried to jailbreak the phone with redsn0w 0.9.6b5 and can get past the "Emergency calls only" screen but the phone still cant detect the SIM card and the Wi-fi is greyed. Now ive read a million posts and gone through all 25 pages of "Unknown IMEI & ICCID" and "Re-virginize iPhone" posts and know that those problems cannot be solved by a software but why i've raised my issue is because i think it is unique and we might be able to solve it through the knowledge of this forum and also because it came alive a day ago!!

    Additional Info:
    FW Version - 4.2.1
    OS - Windows 7 (64-bit)
    iTunes - 10.1.1.4

P.S. Every restore on iTunes is normal till the time the phone reboots. iTunes just keeps waiting for the phone and eventually gives the following message - There is no SIM card in the phone. Please disconnect and put a valid sim card"

There are lot of threads that only apply to the iPhone 2G. Options for solving problems in the category that your problem falls into are mostly limited to hardware on the 3G and 3GS.

Restore log file please http://www.hackint0sh.org/f137/130802.htm Also a syslog of startup might help.

Here is the log file for the iPhone update pre-crash:
    http://pastebin.com/23u4Gvi5

Here is the log file for last restore on the iPhone:

    http://pastebin.com/A3YqHj7q

Also note that my phone restarts on its own periodically. I'm not really sure on how to do a syslog. If you're refering to the use of Cydia then i cant use it since my wi-fi is greyed. I don't see modem firmware & baseband version in the about when i use redsn0w. These options don't read "0", they just aren't there.

Do let me know if you need anything else from my side.

    Thanks,
    Sid

All sounds like hardware to me, the log file looked fine based on a quick scan.

There are plenty of tools that can transfer files and SSH over the USB cable to the iPhone. These don't require wifi to install Cydia packages.
DiskAid, iPhone Browser, Ifunbox, iFuntastic, etc can all copy files over USB.

usbmuxd (the open source version) as well as iphonetunnel-usbmuxconnectbyport - Project Hosting on Google Code can run a SSH session over USB. You don't need wifi at all for troubleshooting.

    Hey,

I've been racking my brains all day to get you a system log but i just cant find it. I've been able to install Cydia and also found a program - "Cyder 2" which helps me install all the apps. Before all this i downloaded the SSH bundleby the dev team and installed it with Redsn0w.

Do let me know how to get you the syslog.

    Thanks

You can enable syslog via SSH - instructions are here:

Another way is to use the iPhone enterprise configuration tool. That allows you to view the console (which includes the syslog output) in real time.
