I have an iphone 2g that I'm currently trying to get working.

It seems to be dead most of the time: it doesn't respond to any buttons. Holding the power button for ten seconds, or power+home, does nothing. It is not recognized when plugged into a computer.

However, if left for a day or so, it will suddenly be able to be powered on, although the touchscreen doesn't seem to respond. When in this state, the phone can be synced with itunes. I've tried wiping it and restoring it that way, with no success--the screen remains unresponsive, and after being unplugged or sitting a little bit it will seem to shut off again and appear totally dead.

Anyone have any ideas?

Sounds like hardware, I have moved it to that forum anyway.
Have you tried a DFU mode restore? You can get into DFU mode without using the home/sleep buttons. See deep in this thread for instructions . http://www.hackint0sh.org/f206/80193.htm
