iPhone 2g LCD Replacement Only
Hello folks of Hackint0sh. After months of reading and learning the incredible amount of information this site has provided to me I've finally registered in need of some advice.
I bought an iPhone 2g for my girlfriend who promptly broke it in less than a month. It took fall from only a few feet high and landed on its side apparently damaging the LCD on the inside, but somehow not the glass or digitizer, which both look and work great. This seems to be an uncommon case that Google has failed me.
On the left side of the phone are multi-colored vertical lines that cover a good quarter of the screen and still remain even when the phone is off. After much searching I've read posts that say that the iPhone 2g's display assembly (glass, digitizer, and lcd) are fused, or glued together creating a very costly entire unit ($150ish.)
Now because the phone only cost me $150 I'm less than thrilled to buy the full assembly which seems to be the good idea and take a chance at separating the digitizer/glass from the lcd, and purchasing a new lcd at only $30ish.
My question is, is this possible? I have the time, patience, and a hair dryer somewhere if anyone has any information to share about the likelihood of being able to pull this off. Thanks for reading.

You can't do this with a 2g lcd digitizer unit...A hairdryer wont do the trick...im not even sure if anyone has ever managed to separate the digitizer from the lcd...Those replacement lcd's they sell are virtually useless.
I'm afraid the only option for broken 2g screens is the entire replacement unit. You can pick some up on ebay for $100 minimum.

It is possible to separate the digitizer from the LCD. But it is very risky. You have to be very careful about that. if you check then you will find a guideline in YOUTUBE. Becareful to remove the screws. And never bend the digitizer.

Thank you for the responses so far. I haven't been able to find a YouTube video or any video that covers this type of operation. If someone had a link that would be great.
I'm hoping I can find a reader that has successfully performed this so I can get some pointers before I go for it. Thanks again.

I have successfully performed this repair. You have to scrape the LCD glass off the digitizer. It takes quite a bit of time.
Here's my video.
