I have the same problem. My Iphone's home button just stopped responding without any warning. It was NOT hardware unlocked nor misused,mishandled,opened.

I have an idea though. Is there a way to map home button to any other button. Like two taps of volume would work as home button or pressing volume up/down together. Can this be done?

My home button does not work either, and it doesn't sync, the only way i can charge it is with the old firewire cables, if its on for like 5 min, it gets really hot, i already tried by changing the connector that "morphtk" said but it won't make a difference, any ideas?

Does anyone know where to find information on how to remove and re-install the home button and its cable from the front frame on the iphone 3G? My home button (and only the home button, not the mic, dock, etc.) has failed. When I open the phone, this button assbly is locked in by the black plastic front frame. Taking the screen off offers no additional access. I looked at the ifixit front panel and display tutorials, and none of them go so far as to show how to remove this part. I would be pretty sure that you can change this since this item is sold all over the internet and ebay. Please help with this as I really can't do much with my phone with out the home button!
