After unlocking, I sometimes get full signal bars, sometimes it even reads my service providers name and prints it (Fido), sometimes I will even get the "E" showing.

Whenever I make a call with it having full bars, it will give me a few "beeps" and say 'call failed'. No sms, no GPRS or EDGE, etc...

Wifi works fine.

But most of the time it will display No Service.

I live in the middle of Toronto, basically downtown. My old phone gets a signal everywhere.

Is there a way that I can check at all that my GSM Radio is absolutely busted, or should I continue to wait for the full firmware factory reset tool to come out?

I have the exact same problem. Did a virgin restore. Still fubar radio...

Well, I had the same problem with one phone and came to this post...

It didn't work for me, instead I replace the commboard and its working. If you can claim warranty I will advice to go to the apple store, other wise, good luck with the post....
