What part of the UK are you in? If you're not comfortable with a soldering iron perhaps someone who lives close to you might be able to do it for you.

london, i found a guy in wembley on ebay who helped me to find the part and says he has the skills to solder no problem who says he will do it for £15!. seems genuine as he has alot of feedback from repairing iphones on there. ive solderd a few wires in the past but i need to buy some thin tips etc to be able to do it so i might aswell pay for it to be done and i dont fancy taking an iron to my £450 phone id rather just pay £15 .

    Here's how I fixed mine:

    1. Remove the two screws on either side of the charging port

    2. Apply a suction cup (I used my Garmin windshield mount), to the glass screen. Try to mount it right below the home button.

    3. Pull the suction cup toward you and the screen should come out (bottom first)

    4. You will see 3 cables running from the top right corner of the screen to the main board of the phone. 3 cables are numbered 1, 2, and 3. Remove the cables in that order. (Note: in the picture, my number 1 cable has already been detached, number 3 is underneath number 2)

    5. Once the three cables are detached, the entire LCD unit is now separate from the main board. I found two youtube videos that might aid you in the process of removing the screen.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmi4lq0FTU4
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8fF0DF-mbn4

    6. Look on the left side of your iPhone LCD unit; you will notice that Apple has already applied a small strip of electrical tape to the metal casing. Unfortunately, this strip is sometimes misaligned, causing light leakage. Simply add more electrical tape to anywhere you experience light leak.

Note: the tape does NOT have to cover the black rubber gasket (the part that meets the bezel when assembled). Simply apply electrical tape to anywhere on the metal frame supporting the LCD unit. Apply tape to all the places you experience light leak.

    7. Reassemble the phone, reconnecting cables 1, 2, and 3, and then re-screw the two screws holding the LCD unit in place.

Your phone should now be light leak free!! Enjoy!

**All of the pictures were taken by me, except for the first, and the two youtube links.
EVERYONE PLEASE NOTE ON STEP 3: 3. Pull the suction cup toward you and the screen should come out (bottom first) PULL VERY SLOWLY! Sometimes the foam holding the connector 4 will remain attached to the screen resulting in Cable 4 being ripped or tore in two.

If this happens to you, replacement parts can be ordered on the cheap here: (Repair Parts Replacement USB/Data Port Socket for iPhone 3G) http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.14830 Replacing this part will require some soldiering.

Anyway, reason for mentioning is that my connector and foam stayed connected to the screen upon pulling apart and the cable ripped in two. No fun, but hey that's part of hacking in the world... so right now I have a $500, iNothing! Hey, at least I have a roof over my head and food in my stomach!

    Later,
    NETling

Have just done exactly what you've described (number 4 connector got stuck to the screen!)

Bigfishman, will PM you for the guy's details from Wembley if that's OK.

    Cheers
    Miles
