Got the iPhone dead, bought an new battery and when I tried to charge it via the wall charger, it just gets real hot. When I toggle the vibrate / ringer switch, it works but no screen image. When I connect it to my PC, I get the "DING" sound and then get an error message when trying to connect to iTunes. I believe this phone was also docked or charged with an incompatible device and got shorted out. So is it the communications board or logic board?

BTW, this is some good reading and information..Thanks!

    Hello Francis,

    2 questions:
1/ Will this jumper solve a problem of an iPhone not powering up when connected to USB of a computer, but booting when plugged directly into a power adapter? (result of water damage). The battery doesn't charge even if plugged in for days.
2/ One point of connection of the jumper is the red battery wire. What is the other end to connect to? It's really not visible in the picture you uploaded.
    Thanks a lot in advance.

Using this method, I revived 2 dead iPhones, thanks Francis!

Both of them would not boot unless they were connected to the wall charger. One of them would show a battery empty logo, the other would be on a booting loop.

    hey all
i've been reading this thread trying to figure out whats wrong with my iPhone.
i bought a used phone, and used it for a bit when i got it. it came from the US so i needed to unlock it (i live in canada). when i tried to downgrade the firmware i kept getting 1600-1604 errors. i've tried everything...now my phone is dead, and i think it is because i used a iPod firewire charger.
i opened it up, but i have no idea if the jumps that were shown before are really the problem. anyone have any ideas?
also, could someone help me out in identifying a way to find out if the comm and logic boards are still functional without having to connect them to another iPhone?
i've had this phone for almost two weeks and haven't been able to get any use out of it, and its killing me!

    thanks,
    bruno

I re-read this thing and I think I finally got it...

The Comm Board Jumper (1st Photo posted by francis1986) fixes the fault in which the iPhone cannot charge a battery even if the icon shows otherwise.

The second photo he posted showing the Logic Board Jumper fix is for when the white wire is accidentally pulled from it soldering pad on the board itself.

Neither fixes address the issue of the iPhone "shorting" out causing the unit to overheat, dis-charging the battery, and ultimately ending up with a dead iPhone. Re-read his post, (#33) there is no mention of a fix and refers to the problem IC which is located on the Logic Board itself. Posts # 4, 7, 9, and 19 refers to the power IC on the logic board itself shorting out very much likely from incompatible aftermarket charging or docking units. (made for the iPods only)

Looks like it is time to find a new logic board...taking apart my mint condition, working, jailbroken, and unlocked unit to test out the other logic and comm boards is out of the question...(Though I was thinking about it...)
