Euro is strong now, right. But there is also a slight chance that I get the $200 Logic board, replace it - and still there is some issue with my phone...
I have a friend currently in Los Angeles that will buy me a phone and bring me during the weekend. I'll part mine out on Ebay.

So, is there a tested and safe place to solder the Black battery wire to if the solder pad is gone?

I connected by iPhone to this JBL Sound System . When I later returned to it, the iPhone was completely dead. Black screen, i've tried connecting it to wall iphone adapter and regular USB charger, tried home button + power button etc, no sign of powert what so ever.
After reading this thread it seems this is a typical issue with none-iPhone sound systems and chargers. To fix this problem I need a new PMIC (Power Management IC) 338S0459 (logic board?), is this correct?
ifixit.com sells them for $200 (expensive), just want to confirm that this is the part that is broken on my iPhone so I can sell it on eBay or buy the component that i need.

Not that I know of, you are going to need a new communications board...

You are correct, the power IC on the logic board is fried. Unfortunately, you just can't swap the power IC without special tools or equipment. Your average DIY is pretty much SOL. Even on eBay, the chances of buying a good working logic board for cheap will be difficult. It will cost you either way...buying one from iFixit or parting out your broken iPhone and then buying a new one...I would wait for the new 3g to be out in a couple of months...

Man, you are the person of the day.
You saved me my 16 comm boards sitting in my drawer.
Thanks.
I would have measured for myself but unfortunately all of mine are dead and not a single working one around.

Xactly.
You first need to make the jumper on the comm board, PLUS replace your logic board.
If you do only the first, you will find your iphone showing message:
"This accessory is not made for working with iPhone. Do you want to switch to airplane mode to avoid interference?" or something similar. It will work, but will heat like hell, drain the battery in 2-3 hours, and once the power IC on comm board (which is seemingly more powerful than the track mentioned) will get bored of stress and probably explode.
If I get my hands on such a "sound system", I will propose a mod for it to make it "safe", e.g. iPhone compatible, but unfortunately ATM I don't have anything such around, and here in Hungary they are quite expensive (for the sake of experimenting, I mean).

h0ly shhh...
the "black" battery terminal is GND.
that means, you can practically solder almost anywhere, but I recommend the shielding can if you have a soldering iron powerful enough.

crusher which jumper is need? the one for the white lead or the red lead. I have a com board I think was killed in that manner, Ive replaced the logic board and it shows the lightning bolt charging symbol when i charge it, but the phone gets really hot. I replaced the battery with a fully charged one, now the phone starts up but I cant get it to dock with my mac. also the phone doesnt respond to being plugged into a ac adapter.

Hi,
My wifi and bluetooth stopped working after about a day. Its an 8gb 1.1.4 iphone.
I think the problem might have been that I used a non standard charger to charge the phone as I got the phone from the states and I am based in Ireland.
The phone works perfectly apart from the bluetooth and Wifi. The bluetooth icon comes on but can't be discovered by my mac. The wifi icon does not come on and just keeps searching and searching. I am guessing that the comms board is the problem as I have tried every possible software trick known.
Is there any definite way to tell if it is the comms board?
If it is can it be repaired or is it really expensive?
Thanks
ps Boss prefs shows the wifi as N/A when I try to start or stop it.
Any advice appreciated.

Your comms board is responsible for such things as bluetooth/wifi and signal matters so yes your comms board could of developed a fault, there is also a chance that it could be your logic board that also may have issues, you are talking around the £140 area to get a board replaced. these guys are very good and also offer a free diagnostic service. their turnaround in getting the phone back to you is usually 3 working days
