This problem has been discussed before in detail. There's no solution (yet) for this except reducing your earpiece volume a few notches.

Default People hearing Echo on the other side

The way I fixed it was turn down the speaker all the way to one bar maybe two. This is a temporary fix; however, it works. I can still hear voices normaly on my side and everbody is happy

    Thanks!

Just so this is officially answered since it's at the top of GOOGLE when searched. (I know this is a year old post)

Simply remove the black bottom piece of your first gen Iphone 2g (carefully) and remove the black felt cover over your Mic piece. While you're at it clean out the holes in the black cover and the volume will increase drastically due to dirt clogging the holes over time. Here is a link to the solution. I've personally done this a couple of times to my phone and friends phone and it solves the problem every time!

The link has a satisfactory solution of the problem. One of my friends having the same problem. Reset the phone. No advance made. Used the ways you described. It seems working better now.
