    Default 2G Testing Reception

Looking for some help, have an 8gig 2G iPhone that had some slight water damage. After repair/cleaning got the phone working 98%. The only issue is with the reception for the cell network. WiFi is fine, blutooth as well, just the cell reception will not register. Two part question:

1 - How can I effectively test the cell reception on a 2G that will not accomodate my sim from another phone?

Once proving the reception is totally defunct which I suspect:

2 - How can I best tell if the communication board is functioning without activating this? Or is there any other testing that I can do to diagnose?
