Factory-unlocked iPhone 4 under 4.1(8B117) fw 02.10.04: Jailbreaking + Unlocking?
Hi guys!
Surfing along the posts I couldn't confirm if I definitely can jailbreak my factory-unlocked iPhone 4 under 4.1 without having any problems. (I work under Windows 7, BTW)
On the other hand, will I lose the unlocking after performing the Jailbreak under Greenp0ison? Everywhere I turn I read comments referring to the impossibility of unlocking after the Jailbreak under 4.1.
If I proceed, would I be able to continue using my iPhone or chances are it will end up bricked?
Also, my questions are related to the interesting amount of people around here that claims Greenp0ison did this, did that, stuck their phones, killed their wi-fi, and a long etcetera...
Thanks for reading me and especially for the divine patience shown by senior members of this forum.
Warm regards!
Matt

PD: BTW I am used to follow iClarified tutorials. But I couldn't find directions there on how to unlock after Greenp0ison Jailbreak...

ok first have you need to have your iphone activated via itunes this is to make sure that your simcard is indeed working then once you can connect to the homescreen you can proceed with a redsnow JB or a greenpoison JB nothing will disappear after that since i have confirmed from my friend's iphone and it worked id like to add i was the one who jailbreaked his iphone so yeah im a witness here just dont JB on an OTB iphone because if you do your going to skip the activation process which is done if the phone is OTB state or else your going to end up with an expensive form of the ipod

This is very good advice that many who are new to jailbreaking seem to forget. It's also something many of the how to jailbreak guides skip over.

Thanks Olethros for the insight!
So the deadline is: I'd better wait until directions for unlocking in my case are more precise? Meaning: if I go ahead with the JB I will lose the factory unlocking...
Cheers 2 ya all!

No you are mis-interpreting what I said.
If Apple has set your specific phone as "factory unlocked", it will be unlocked as part of the iTunes activation and it will also allow you to activate the phone with a SIM card from any carrier.
I dislike the term "factory unlocked" as Apple doesn't use it in any of their official communications. It is also technically incorrect as the unlock is not set at the factory.
What I was trying to say in my previous post was:
On any iPhone, if you jailbreak at the "slide for emergency" screen, you bypass legitimate activation.
So.. if you wait to jailbreak until after you have allowed iTunes to activate and unlock your iPhone then on a true factory unlocked phone can be safely jailbroken (I recommend you use redsn0w to jailbreak, NOT greenpois0n or limera1n). You should of course have already taken steps to save your 4.1 SHSH (it's too late now if you haven't)
There are a lot of people who are confused/misinformed that they truly have a "commitment free" or "officially unlocked" phone. These phones usually cost US$200+ over the normal non-subsidised price. For example, a 32GB "commitment free" iPhone 4 - 32GB from canada or hong kong should cost between $900 and $1000
It is not enough to trust that you are paying a premium for a legitimate product - there are a lot of scammers out there exploiting the desire for unlocked phones. I recommend that you personally confirm that your phone is truly "commitment free"
We've discussed the procedure for this before in other threads (not specifically for the iPhone 4) http://www.hackint0sh.org/f127/180956.htm

thx
Thanks a lot Olethros for this feedback; it's been truly educational for me. I've bought my iphone in United Arab Emirates (it costed close to $1,000) and it worked without any issues with two different SIMcards. So far I didn't dare jailbreaking it... and I was very close to do it via Greenp0ison. Now I know I'd better go with your recommendation and will also save my SHSH blobs (presently studying what's this all about).
I think I got it so far but I'd also appreciate any further comment you guys might like to throw in, no matter what insignificant it appears to be.
I used to be an 'expert' jailbreaking iPhone 3Gs but every now and then new things come up and the brain-racking process appears to be endless!
Warm regards to you all and please keep up with this fine job at Hackint0sh!

Thanks a lot Olethros again. I have performed the JB using redsn0w and everything went smoothly. I have also stored the SHSH blob, before the procedure. And must say a jailbroken iPhone 4 works great: no crashes, tons of things to do with the phone and everyone can enjoy from the very same speed it shows before doing it.
Very much appreciate your help and the rest of the guys.
Cheers
Matt

now if your asking what this SHSH its all about in a layman's term its apple's way of check your phone on a 'legit' firmware, basically put its apple's way of check whether or not you will be 'forced' to upgrade to their software just to prevent people from downgrading them, this unless you have a backed up a signed SHSH (linked to your phone via a unique chip key IIRC called ECID) in which you can trick apple via itunes that you can restore your firmware into an older version

One additional piece of information:
With the most recent redsn0w, if you run it with the correct command line option, it is possible to jailbreak *without* activation. This can be useful in some situations (especially if you use the redsn0w feature that allows you to install packages without Cydia), you can install OpenSSH then install Subscriber Artificial Module and ultrasn0w via SSH - before activating legitimately.
