occasionally the green/ orange light doesn't come on when I plug it into my mac. should I really be worried? There isn't anything blocking it in the port (extensive amounts of dust etc.)

Check that you have inserted it properly. If the light doesn't come on but it's still charging, then it's nothing to worry about, but if it's not then it's cheap enough to replace I guess.
